Encroachment of tank beds by the Government in the name of ‘public good’, a defunct Lake Development Authority (LDA), and a blind eye towards private encroachment on the water bodies in the City!

Chikkamaranahalli lake

idontspam - 14 July, 2009 - 20:09

I still remember the Chikkamaranahalli lake in the early 80's when we moved to ward 4. Used to immerse the Ganesha there just across from an open ground which passed off for the Devasandra bus stand. A thin bund connected to Nagashettyhalli. Dissappeared in front of my eyes for a layout.

The ISRO headquarters Antrix Bhavan sits on this lake. So again proviing govt is the worst violator here.

The alternative land allotted to the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) is also on a tank bed. Who gives the government the right to screw up  lakes?

There is a high court ruling that prohibits the allocation of tank beds for any purposes what so ever. The govt has filed an interim application with the court to have this ruling modified to facilitate this transfer.

The govt is a safe keeper of public property - it does not own it. We need to do something to protect this - before its too late.

It is learnt that High Court has allowed the government's interim application for modification of the Act pertaining to change of use of tank bed areas and given the approval "TO DO AS IT PLEASES" with the Chikkajala tank bed area proposed to be given to BTC. Source: Bangalore Mirror 14-7-09 pg.2.

Is this in modification of High Court's earlier ruling of 1995 when it ordered 'land belonging to tank bed areas in Bangalore Metropolitan area may not be granted for any purpose, person or organisation?'

We can deduce only after details of court orders are examined by environmentalists and commented upon.

Point of order is: Will this not give a 'blanket permission' to the authorities for future decisions on use/misuse of tank beds?
