ORR bottleneck - Bhadrappa Layout
idontspam - 7 November, 2009 | Bangalore | BBMP | BDA | ORR | magic boxes | Analysis | Sanjaynagar | Transportation | Infrastructure | Flyovers and underpasses
It is a good move by BDA to make the ORR Bhadrappa layout junction signal free. This junction assumes significance due to the fact that most of Sanjaynagar and RMV layout and gazillion other layouts in between use the Dr Rajagopal road/Gundappa road to reach ORR go towards the airport.
Why? Because taking Bhoopasandra main road Doesnt get you towards the airport across the railway lines. If you need to go towards the airport you have to either travel on the wrong side of the one lane exit from Bellary road (bhoopsandra road in map) and do a dangerous U turn or go all the way to Anand Nagar junction along the entry ramp (slip road in the map) to take the U turn.

An additional modification needs to be done to achieve a streamlined Bhadrappa layout junction. And this is building an underpass at the Railway line (badly shaped red polygon in map) which is currently manned railway gate. The railway line is at a raised height and most traffic find it difficult to climb up the mound getting off the ORR or dangerously avoid hitting road crossers when getting off the gate and joining ORR. Lot of minor incidents can be observed here.

BBMP/BDA should strongly consider a magic box underpass at this railway crossing which will stream line the junction and avoid expensive modifications to the Bellary road end to cater to Airport bound traffic.
One needs to also have a sign board at the point where rajagopal road branches off into gundappa road (red marker on map below) to indicate to people heading towards Tumkur road to use Dr Rajagopal road and for people heading towards the airport to use Gundappa road. This will balance the traffic as only people familiar with the area know to use the correct roads.

The 2 lane Dr Rajagopal road connecting to the ORR has become an important corridor after the authorities conviniently ignored the people of Sanjaynagar when building the Hebbal flyover. They probably didnt think anybody from here would want to use the airport.
Underpass urgency

The underpass assumes significance after recent developments that CRS will start gathering steam. There are a lot of manned junctions along this track and this is one of the roads with heavy traffic.
Update on streamlining

From the junction (marker in pic 3 of blog post), Gundappa road has been made one way heading towards ORR from Nagashettyhalli & Rajagopal rd is one way from ORR towards Nagashetyhalli. Now a magic box under both the railway junctions will be good.
Till the flyover comes up traffic police are going to be a busy lot here. I will get to try this out in March unless Ritesh or somebody else living in that area can post the observations before then.
Now putting the magic box is

Now putting the magic box is ruled out..as BWSSB has laid the big pipes parallel to the railway lines..dont know how they put magic box here?? its great idea to stream line the movement of vehicles here...so that people can cross this road either towards hebbal/BIAL or towards to kodege halli/ sahakara nagar.. god knows when its gonna happen.
Accessibility for Sanjaynagar
idontspam - 14 May, 2012 - 14:42
The pipes will be at a depth, nevertheless all railway crossings in the city has to be removed by railways.
I am going around telling the sanjaynagar folks to cast next vote to the person who can committ to improve accessibility to Ring road & Bellary road including eliminating these railway crossings.
