It looks like raining of new trains in Karnataka, courtesy Shri. Kharge.

"...Tumkur: Union Railway Minister Mallikarjun M Kharge promised a new train between Tumkur and Bangalore to facilitate the daily commuters. It will either be an express or a fast passenger train which will stop at 2-3 stations between the two cities. In his brief stopover on his sojourn to Londa, he interacted with the members of the Daily Commuters Forum, led by Tumkur MP G S Basavaraju. “A new train would be run which starts from Tumkur at 8 am as soon as possible,” he said. He also promised upgrading platforms, a railway underpass and a skywalk in the city, all in a phased manner. About 8,000 passengers, including 4,500 people with season tickets, travel between the two cities daily.  Hitherto, they were travelling in the Sholapur-Bangalore Kurkure Express which would arrive here at 8.30 am. They were affected as the time of the train was rescheduled..."

Passengers and railway

Passengers and railway officials celebrate launch of a special train between B'lore and Tumkur on Monday

Officials of the South-West Railway were in for a surprise on Monday morning when a group of commuters walked into their office and offered them sweets.

The commuters, who were from Tumkur, were at the office to thank the railway officials for running a special train between Tumkur City and Bangalore. About 4,000 passengers commute from Tumkur to Bangalore every day. Though about 22 trains ply on the route, most passengers depend on either the push-pull train (trains that can be driven from either end) from Arsikere or Sholapur express trains. Commuters who travel to Bangalore for work prefer Sholapur express as it reaches Tumkur at 8 am, as the train from Arasikere reaches early in the morning.

When the timings of Sholapur express was changed to 6.30 am in May, a group of commuters, among the many inconvenienced by the new schedule, decided to campaign for a special train. They distributed pamphlets among other passengers and called for a meeting on June 2. As many as 600 passengers turned up for the meeting and their signatures, contact numbers and address, along with that of about 600 others were collected. In addition, a forum called Tumkur-Bangalore employee daily commuters was created following the meeting.

Members of the forum, led by a government employee BH Ramakumari, met top railway officials in Bangalore and briefed them about the 25,000 students, government and private sector employees and others travellers, including 4,800 seasonal ticket holders, between the two cities who desperately needed  a special train from Tumkur.

The delegation met Union railway minister Mallikarjun Kharge in Bangalore on July 9 to press for the demand. As they did not get an assurance from the minister then, members of the forum approached Kharge during his visit to Tumkur railway station on June 11. Kharge agreed to their demand and it was fulfilled in a span of about two months.

On Monday, the passengers were at the South-West Railway office in Bangalore to celebrate the success of their efforts.

Karnam Ramesh, employee of a private firm, who was in the forefront of the campaign, said the officers who were given sweets exclaimed that they had provided new trains to many other places as well, but none had come forward to thank them.

Ramesh explained that their demand was met as they managed to convince the railway department and political leaders about the viability of plying a new train in the route.

We never wanted the campaign to be violent. We had decided that none of us would stop trains or pelt stones. It was decided to approach the department in a right manner. In addition, top officers of the railway department helped us throughout the movement,” he said.

This is good things done by Tumkur Commuters,  same way Bangalore -Whitefield commuters should put pressure on Railway Minister and also by Yesvantpur - Hosur,  Nelamangala, Chikballapur commuters.

representation to Mr.Kharge

jp - 8 August, 2013 - 05:08

It is not 9th July, It is on 12th July we first met Mr.Karge in Railway bhavan at contonment. We should thank Mr. Chikkarangiah, who is Ex KPCC General Secretary who hail from Tumkur led our team along with Rama Kumari and others. We did not get any assurence except providing 2 extra courches to Arasikere  Bangalore passenger on that day. But there was a mircacle on 13th July when we met againMr. Karge  at Tumkur railway station. There was a clear assurence on that day that they run one express train soon. Running an express train from tumkur was dream of tumkur commuters from past 22 years.  The dream of 22 years came true in 21 years after Mr. Karge took over as railway minister.

Thanks to Rammohan providing info,  this train is getting flagged by Railway Minister at 11AM from Marikuppam and this was announced during budget.

A new passenger train was flagged off by Shri Mallikarjuna Kharge, Minister of Railways to day at 12.30pm from Marikuppam. The inaugural function was arranged nicely by the Railways and was attended by a huge crowd of more than 3000. Mr Kharge while addressing the gathering was touching all the railway projects in Karnataka in general and in particular relevant to the area are: new track from Marikuppam to Kuppam, Kolar to Whitefield, Srinivasapur to Madanapalle, Bangarapet to Cuddappa, etc. He advised the MLAs present to vehemently pressurise the State Government to provide land and also allot funds as agreed to with the Railways, so that with all the sincerity railways will take up project. He assured to increase number of coaches in the MEMU/DEMU trains to meet the existing heavy traffic.I suppose he is an action oriented minister. The Minister added that due to a minor problem, inauguration of Kolar-Chikkabalur BG project is getting delayed.

The schedule of new train:

T No.66519 leaves Marikuppam at 04.45 am and reach Bangalore City at 7.40 am

T No.66529 leaves Bangalore City at 8.15 pm and reaches Marikuppam at 10.30pm

The train will have stops at all stations upto Bangarapet, then at Malur, Whitefield, Krishnarajapuram and Bangalore Cantt.

This train is a boon to those commuters who have to attend to offices/factories early morning in the City.

R Ram Mohan
