The Bombay High Court on Tuesday observed that the state government is not ready to experiment with the Traffic Restraint Scheme (TRS) and was instead depending on infrastructure projects and enhancement of public transport system. The court was hearing a PIL filed by Bombay Environmental Action Group (BEAG) and the Smoke Affected Residents’ Forum seeking the implementation of the Traffic Restrain System (TRS) in Mumbai.

“By developing infrastructure you are not going to solve this mess,” observed a Division Bench of Justice Bilal Nazki and Justice A R Joshi on Tuesday while reserving the case for judgment.

The Western India Automobile Association told the court that the motor industry provides 20 million jobs and passing an order restricting new vehicles won’t be a good option.

Parking charges is the only acceptable way of controlling private transport vehicles.

You think they will simply go gently into the night?

Bombay CBD is the easiest place to implement a congestion charge.  You have one entry at Mahim Causeway and another at Sion.  Put in ERP gantries and have all cars have IVUs.  No one is stopping them from entering or being manufactured.  Just pay Rs.50 for peak hours and Rs.25 for off peak hours.

All this odd and even licensed plate is very tough to monitor.

Anyway peak oil is a reality we will have to face in the next 2-3 years.
