The buzz about buses

Coinciding with the city's spectacular growth, the erstwhile Bangalore Transport Service (BTS) transformed into the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) in 1997. Since then, its fleet has increased from about 1,800 to 6,000.

The corporation introduced hi-tech buses to attract those who would otherwise use their own vehicles. But there are still challenges facing the BMTC. While some feel bus services are better, others say BMTC has still not managed to woo private vehicle users to shift to public transport. Absence of last-mile connectivity, irrational routing and imbalance in service are among the reasons people cite for preferring private vehicles.

In this background, the live interaction programme of The Hindu — ‘It's Official' — will host this month BMTC Managing Director Syed Zameer Pasha, who will be interacting with our readers. The programme will be held on The Hindu office premises between 3.30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on May 28.

The first 30 readers who send their grievances/suggestions on issues related to BMTC services will be invited for the interaction, where Mr. Pasha will address the issues and also chart out BMTC's vision for the city.

The Hindu has taken this initiative — It's Official — to act as a bridge between the utility agencies and the public in addressing various grievances and issues. Mail your complaints and/or suggestions to It's Official, The Hindu, 19 & 21, Bhagwan Mahaveer Road (Infantry Road), Bangalore 560001 or itsofficial.thehindu@gmail.com along with your passport-sized photograph before May 23.
