In a memorandum to Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, Mr. Basavaraj demanded that  .... He sought allocation of more funds to take up electrification of a track between Yeshwanthapur and Tumkur. ... In the memorandum, he sought trains between Tumkur and Bangalore city every hour and between Tiptur and Tumkur.

Extension of trains : Mr. Basavaraj also demanded the extension of trains no. 101 and 102 Arrakonam-Bangalore passenger up to Tumkur.

From above its very clear,  its nothing but Commuter Rail with EMU coaches between Bangalore to Tumkur thats what Tumkur MP is demanding.   Also Tumkur needs connectivity to East of Bangalore ( Biyappanahali )

As things can be seen from MP's request,  that means people traveling from Tumkur are demanding Commuter Rail!

Tumkur residents have always

Tumkur residents have always been demanding trains regularly from Bangalore. Few months back in hindu there was a news regarding people wanting a train around 7PM as there was no train after 6:20Pm passenger up to Rani Chennamma. Recently the Gol gumbaz/Bijapur Express from Yeshvantapur departure was changed to 7:45PM. But when people are demanding it will be good if Railways can connect areas arund 50KMs of Bangalore with regular trains. Now that track from Chennapatna to Tumkur has been doubled completely introducing DMU's for the stech will not be a problem. Similarly regular DMU can run from K.R.Puram to Tumkur via Baiyappanhali and Yeshvantapur. Since track is doubled train will take max 90 minutes so a complete round trip say about 4 hrs. For frequency of 1/2 an hour once sWR will require about 5 rakes -if same runs from Chennapatn aeven halting time at SBC will be minimal so wont affect other trains too

Defintely, it is the need of the situation.

As the train fair is too low comapred to KSRTC & also to private buses that's far better.

Next, the daily commuters are daily wage workers and students.

Next, the traffic is also the reason for demading train.

We need Corporators, MLA's, MP's like him.

Great job Mr.Tumkur MP

It is good suggestion

To cater to the needs of growing population of cities like Mysore, Tumkur, Hubli and others Railways can think of introducing:

1 Hourly service in Tumkur - Bangalore - Mysore line

2 Once in two hour service from Bangalore to Shimoga and back

3 Once in two hour service from Bangalore to Hubli/Belgaum and back

Shimoga and Hubli services can be operated as alternate hour slots.

Pl. remember that Arakonam is having a regular local train service to and from Chennai.  The distance between Arakonam and Chennai is almost equal to distance between Tumkur and Bangalore.

Apart from these, railways can think about introducing Bidadi - Bangalore - Whitefield and Bidadi - Bangalore - Yelahanka services also.

Most of the existing services to places like Hubli and Shimoga are either in the early morning or during night only.  These trains reach destinations during late in the night.

People who are living in far-away extensions as well elderly people, ladies and families with kids find it reach or leave stations during early mornings/late nights.

These type trains during day time will help these commuters to a greater extent.  These trains can be operated with 8 to 10 coaches like Jan Shatabdi.

Sanjeev,

Now that Namma Railu concept has sinked in with GOK bureaucrats and seems to be supportive, it is very important that the next round of consultation and drumming up the support be from these MPs.

The Tumkur MP is right and should be lauded for asking the right thing. His demand very much aligns with NR proposals. I would recommend that we start having consultations with these MPs. In that approach we need to quickly move to get the NR action reported translated in Kannada for dialog with  the local legislatures and MPs.

In my preliminary analysis, Socio-Economic benefits of Commuter Rail far exceeds the upfront cost of infrastructure and system. Reports have been produced highlighting the humongous benefits of commuter rail system in terms of :

  1. Congestion Management Benefits and savings
  2. Safety benefits
  3. Affordable Mobility Benefits
  4. Cross-Sector Benefits
  5. Social and Environmental Benefits
  6. Economic Benefits including employment generation

One such reports is from a case study of Commuter Rail in America. Read Here for more "http://www.vtpi.org/railben.pdf"
