Thrilling !

Hi All ! This had to start sometime to get the public aware at least that such options do exist. Whilst this will be a rudimentary form of BRTS with no real priority for buses (except for the dedicated busways), it will spur the authorities to examine the pitfalls & weaknesses that exist in implementing this system, particularly at intersections & with a long line of buses, & give it some thought as to how it can be made more efficient. In Pune, I understand that what started as a failure, is now working quite well in the country's first 3.5km of BRTS corridor, & the system is going to be extended, whilst Ahmedabad is also investing heavily into BRTS. This is certainly a step in the right direction, but our traffic police must doggedly pursue it & continue to accord lower & lower priority to private vehicles - there is no other cure for curtailing the growth in vehicle population & chaos on the roads. Bus Galu separate aagi hogta idre thumbha channagi iruthe !!

nija naveen. the thing is to stick to it and be adaptive about it. i was disheartened by the tone of the DH article. why mock somebody who is trying? so what if auto lanes failed? autos are have no fixed routes. very difficult to navigate them like trains on rails. with buses as you said, they have to constantly evaluate what works and what does not and change the system. but never drop the idea like they did last time. stick with it. it will work. it is the right way to go. two immediate things: #1. bus bays, to improve catchment and for efficiency (not keep aa non stopping bus waiting). #2. add extra signals for buses. will get back with some details..

A step in the right direction

Having dedicated bus lanes is a step in the right direction. Having hard lanes is not. What if a bus breaks down? Do the other buses have to back up 100m. Imagine the chaos. Check out Indore's BRTS http://www.citybusindore.com/olbts.asp. When I visited Indore about 8 years back, it was a remarkably civilised city (Bangalore was also reasonably civilised then). I wonder if it is still so. Have the police consulted BMTC on this? Unilateral decisions rarely work. They need to identify corridors (maybe they have). They need to work with BMTC to put their best drivers on these corridors and make it work (maybe they have). The police and the BMTC needs to monitor this for 3 months to see what problems crop up. E.g. left turns on those roads - how do other vehicles interact with the buses on these stretches? The police seems to be famous for starting something and then moving onto some other new idea. The other thing - no buses ply on the MG Road stretch between Brigade Road and KSCA. Why? Having a good bus service from this heavily visited area to different parts of the city would seem like a good idea. Asking people to walk to Richmond circle or Mayo Hall will not work. The dedicated auto lane on KG Road (from Hudson church to Palace Road) is on the wrong side of the road. The entry point here is largely from Hudson Church. Autos cut across the road to reach there. They then cut back to the left to go towards the station. Where is the sense? The suto lane should have been on the second lane on the left with the buses on the extreme left. Srivathsa

2 Way BMTC movement

Arun - 6 December, 2007 - 05:06

This was long pending. Also the parking has to be removed on St.Marks, Residency and Commissariat Roads. With this space, 2-way movement of only BMTC should be permitted. Buses should start plying on MG as well. On KG and Seshadri Roads too, it should be a 2 way BMTC movement. This surely, would bring back all the passengers who have moved away to 2Whs due to this stupid one way rule.

rein them..

blrsri - 6 December, 2007 - 07:23

what is also to be noted is the ego's of the BMTC drivers.. typical senario.. a bus stop..one BTS has parked..there is one more behind and he tries to overtake him and in the process blocks traffic on the two lane road..this happens all the time! For instance, it happened today, as everyday, at Indranagar(OMR near BDA cplx) and Mysore road toll gate stop.. Whats could be done is make the busses use either the left or the right lane and stay there...unless there is an exception(does not include a bus stop) ..hard marking lanes for them in my opinoin not a great way to do cos where is the road?! And design bus bays where the busses stop w/o hindering other vehicular traffic! Think they had already identified this and were working on it..lets see if it works!

Bus Lanes

BMTC PUSHES FOR DEDICATED LANES
Times News Network

Desperate to breathe easy in the maddening traffic, the BMTC on Thursday requested the traffic police to make a provision for dedicated bus lanes in 16 corridors of the city.
“We are expanding. Dedicated bus lanes are central to BMTC’s future,’’ says the letter, adding that the BMTC wants bus lanes on Outer Ring Road, KG Road, JC Road, Sankey Road and Tumkur Road, among others. With the Devanahalli international airport to open in March, a bus lane from Mehkri Circle to the airport has also been proposed.
BMTC officials did a study on the Outer Ring Road and are keen on a Bus Rapid Transit between Hebbal and Central Silk Board on Hosur Road which will be the longest dedicated bus lane in the city.
Given that the city’s roads are narrow, the traffic police are studying this suggestion.
They are looking into aspects like length and width of the road and the flow of BMTC buses on it. A bus lane requires at least 3.5 metres width.
“To have a dedicated bus lane, the road should have six lanes. Also, the flow of BMTC buses should be high on the road. Else, it is not feasible
,” said K C Ramamurthy, additional commissioner (traffic and security).

Initially, police are considering bus lanes on JC Road (Minerva Circle to Town Hall) and KG Road (Hudson Circle to Mysore Bank Circle).

Will bus lanes help ease traffic?
Dedicated bus lanes will surely reduce the number of accidents by BMTC buses. This year (till October 31), BMTC buses killed 97 persons and injured 288 persons. Traffic police, experts and BMTC officials are unanimous on the benefits of dedicated bus lanes. “There’s no doubt that it helps in faster movement of buses. But we have to consider the roads and their condition before introducing them,” said Ramamurthy. According to chief traffic manager, BMTC, Dastagir Sharief, BMTC has already identified 14 roads for immediate implementation.

EXPERT VIEW

With BMTC planning to ply additional services, it becomes important to implement dedicated bus lanes. Also, 60% of Bangalore’s roads are narrow, which has led to congestion. Dedicated bus lanes can be introduced in all the oneways, as each of these roads is either three-lane or fourlane. The extreme left can be exclusive for buses. This will also improve the speed of buses, which can move at over 20 kmph, against the existing 15-16 kmph.

Dedicated lanes?

shas3n - 7 December, 2007 - 08:39

Ella OK, but I was wondering if these bus lanes will be 'only' for buses or not. If they are only for buses (which they should be), then how are they going to prevent other vehicles from entering those 'relatively' free lanes during peak traffic hours? Only the prospect of getting creamed never deterred a daring two wheeler driver from breaking rules. -Shastri
