Non-disconnected Ring Road Routes
ss87 - 25 January, 2010 | Bangalore | BMTC | Route | ORR | Bus | Analysis | Transportation | public transport
There has been a lot of topics going on regarding the disconnected Ring Road routes of Bangalore and problem in changing buses. But it is not the ordinary bus users but generally Volvo bus users who face this problem.
Ring Road is not actually disconnected. Following routes imply it:
Banashankari-->Silk Boad-->Marathalli-->Hebbal connected by 500A and C-1 variant frequently
Marathalli-->Hebbal-->BELCircle-->Gorguntepalya-->Nagarbhavi-->Kengeri by 502A frequently
Hebbal-->Kengeri-->Banashankari by 501A and C-2 frequently
Kengeri-->Banashankari-->Marathalli by 502 frequently.
Now where is Ring Road disconnected. A person from Silk board going to other side of Hebbal would obviously go via City centre and not on ring road wasting his time. The 35kms strech is connected very well by frequent buses operating from 4 different points.
Now if the above routes only run the crowd will definitely be very high. Hence we have the small routes like 500D(silk board to Hebbal),500T(Marathalli to Hebbal),500C(Silk board to K.R.Puram),500N(Banashankari to Tin factory) etc to minimize the crowd on buses.

@prabha Why dont u get down

@prabha
Why dont u get down on the next stop on the ring road(Multiplex) cross the road and take the next bus i.e 500K to Multiplex stop cross the road and 500A or C-1 from there. Or take a 502A ,500T or 500B starting from Marathalli bridge towards Hebbal
ring road routes

hi,
iam regular bus commuter from AECS layout to Manyata tech park in Hebbal, all the buses mentioned here all ply on the ring road, so in the morn..esp ..u have to take some bus which ply to marathahalli and walk up to 1 km either side of the bridge to take these buses.. it is actually tiring to carry laptops and walk 1-2 kms.. to catch a bus like 500A/500D..that is why most of my colleagues and me do not take these buses in the morn..
now BMTC has introduced 500DB volvo buses from hopefarm to Hebbal thro' AECS layout ..but the catch is frequency is low and the same issue discussed here many times.. we dont know what are the timings..BMTC website and call center have no clue on the timings..when i called up they asked me to call up the depot..
didn't get you

So, are you suggesting that BMTC is deliberately doing it? Or, are you being sarcastic?
practical problems with BMTC services
rameshk - 10 August, 2010 - 09:33
Bus services with unpredicatble timings (which sometimes means waiting more than an hour for the goddamn bus), buses which do not stop at designated spots, roads filled with construction debris (esp. for flyover/underpass construction) which make reaching to/from bus stops including crossing roads very painful/dangerous, rash drivers of public and private vehicles who make roads unsafe for pedestrians are only some problems which I can remember off-hand. Even the lure of the air-con comfort of the volvo buses (at the cost of a big hole in the pocket) does not help when you don't know when (whether) you will get a bus and if you do, whether you will find a seat (why else do we pay the volvo fares?).
I tried passionately with an open mindeset to travel only in BMTC buses for a couple of months and my experience (major part of it being on the ORR between silkborad and Hebbal) was not very promising. After losing several hours of time, getting drained physically and emotionally, and no perceptibel economic benefits (last mile more than makes up for the gains made by travelling in "cheap" buses). Forcefully, I had to start using my private transport again.
BMTC Timetable

Forcefully, I had to start using my private transport again.
I guess the resounding refrain time & again is timetable, timetable, timetable. It is the hallmark of any reliable transport service, woefully absent in BMTC.
@Manjari, Srivatsava,
We should meet BMTC for further discussion soon.

the monopoly has to go

I myself used to take the Big-10 until a few months back. But, when I wanted to go beyond Mayo Hall, I had to engage an auto, since, strangely, after the 'Kendra Saarige' (or whatever that was called) flopped (due to poor planning as also sabotage), no replacement has been thought of yet.
Once I was waiting near 'the HOSMAT' (near the football stadium), around 7 PM, to catch a G-3 to Koramangala. After about a 10 minute wait, a bus showed up. But, with the traffic light at the junction ahead turning green, the driver just drove past leaving me and a few others stranded. Some adventurous few cut across the traffic and jumped on when the bus slowed down in the traffic. But, that of course is not for me. A whole lot of buses other than G-3 went past. But, not knowing where they were headed, given the highly 'encrypted' destination boards of the regular BMTC buses (Blackberry would be proud of the job, I should think), I was vary about boarding them. In the event, I landed up trudging all the way upto the Games village, on poorly paved and ill-lit side-walks (that is, wherever it exists), before a friend driving past noticed me and gave me a lift. After that incident, I have more or less given up on the Big-10 too.
The 'neo-pseudo-Socialists' will perhaps say that I suffer from a mind-set against travelling in public transport buses, and that's the root cause of the problem. But, then what about Prabha and Ramesh, and so many more, who have been repeatedly posting similar experiences on PRAJA?
@ Pathy Sir - Even with all of the above and more, you still believe any good will come out of talking to BMTC officials? I know you still manage all your travel using BMTC services. But, Sir, you are a rare exception. And, I am sure you also agree that the city could do with better bus services. In fact, the city owes it to people like you.
And, not just better, it has to improve multi-fold. And, very plainly, that just can't happen with a monopoly government service provider. Besides, bus services are too vital an infrastructure a sector for it (and the city) to be denied the gains from the services of professional service providers. Their entry needs to be systematically facilitated. We need to be demanding that.
Even if they may charge higher (which need not necessarily be, if the government's facilitation is properly targeted, and also because of resulting operational efficiencies), the ultimate monthly commuting bill of even a poor family can become much lower, with dependence on auto's reducing drastically. For more, check this
I can't agree more with Mr. Muralidhar.
Though I manage to travel by BMTC wherever they are willing to take me, I cannot go where I really want to go due to unplanned routing, one ways and other short comings, without BMTC & Traffic Police really caring for the needs of the commuters.
Only way is to operate parallel private services to create healthy competition.
BMTC is a fire wall and has no conscience.
But in the mean time we have no alternative but to keep talking to any of their officials who are willing to listen to us.
Hope Mr. Srivatsava will fix the next meeting soon.

Railway monopoly

This should extend to railways as well.
@Murali 772 No not being

No not being sarcastic i have wondered at times what would have happened if routes like 500D didnt exist-like whenever I travelled on ring road in route no. 500A which would get crowded by the time it came out to Sangam circle stop at Banashankari. At silk board definitely a 500D would move out on seeing a 500A entering and one more bus would be full. I used to wonder what would have happened if that 500D had not moved out.
these short distance cut routes would definitely be a problem for long distance passengers especially in the late hours-but in peak hours they are quite a boon-I myself was a victim of the cut routes 15 days back around 8:30PM on a saturday at Ramamorthy nagar when 500A did not turn up for 20 minutes and 500D,500T,500C etc were un boardable forcing me to travel to Richmond circle and take a bus back home spending nearly 1 1/2 times the travel time(No cost as i had my day pass-only time)-but anyway i plan to rely only on majestic bus in the night time-atleast they exist till 12
Non-Disconnected Routes / Big Circle Full Circle is the key
Vasanth - 14 August, 2010 - 15:13
Well, we all know the problems of BMTC. Buses do not stop in bus stop, they will make the passengers to run behind the bus, changing of the buses costs the passengers more especially with the current fare structure, our poor junctions and poor bus stops all makes it very difficult to change the buses.
There was an argument by ss87 that nobody would travel more than a semi circle, rather they will take the straight routes / Big 10s. But, there are lots of cases which do not address this problem, such as people working in Manyata Tech Park and staying in BSK III Stage, they have to do a 2/3 changeovers. Every changeover is a pain.
Apart from this, there is lot of competition among buses, especially volvos to get the 'girakis' and in that mood, they do not ride the buses by keeping the time sense of the passengers. 'ITPL,ITPL', 'Banashankari, Banashankari' is the usual calls like private buses.
Key is to have disconnected buses running full circle with strict monitoring of the time gap between buses. This will improve the safety of passengers in our chaotic junctions like silkboard and Banashankari, anxiety of hopping onto next bus (will I get or not), effeciency of the buses if monitored strictly will improve.
Bendy / Trailer A/C buses should also be introduced to reduce overcrowding and the buses should run at a frequency which should be strictly monitored via GPS by BMTC between morning 5AM - midnight 12AM. Bangalore does not sleep till 12 and wakes up at 5 almost like Mumbai.
Sameway S1 and S2 which had good routing was withdrawn without announcement to public.
Disconnected K1,K2,K3 runs which again leads to passengers hopping on and hopping off. Why not connected service?
Full circle buses with frequency will not cause crowding. Otherway around we can have various starting points for the full circle buses like Silkboard to Silkboard, Banashankari to Banashankari, Hebbal to Hebbal, Kengeri to Kengeri.
Busdays should be oriented in introducing these kind of new and innovative ways to improve bus service helping all sector of people right from coolies to techies. Except for the introduction of few shuttles to connect to trunk routes, nothing special was done. Nowadays, BMTC is having no topic for Busdays.
All types of services are need of the hour.

To over come the problem faced by passengers......... BMTC has to implement certain changes.
As we all see that many passengers move to MAJESTIC or SHIVAJI NAGAR or CORPARATION. this is the main reason why there is always a traffic jam also the by this we spend more money and time.
We need to deconjest these areas by following met6hods...
1) By connecting to all parts of bangalore like
Bangalore SOUTH to north( JP NAGAR/JAYANAGAR/BSK to beyond YPR/BEL/HEBBAL) bypassing the K.B.S./S.B.S
2) B.SOUTH to dead West
3) B.South to dead East
like this from all directions..... this will cetainly help earn revenue and help public by passing the central regions.
But BMTC should start with GOOD frquecny..... the above idea is just like the K-1,2,3 and the short ring road services..
Please let me know your feedback... I too have prepared have a document how to make BMTC a better service provide along with profit.
The present situation is they are just earning profit without providing serives..
@Sashi kumar Y Well I
ss87 - 8 December, 2010 - 13:16
@Sashi kumar Y
Well I actually got an idea what could be done now that BMTC has released its schedule list and we have them uploaded here the following could be done:
1. Route merging i.e merge routes through the common connecting points-Eg:Out of 16 buses from J.P.Nagar to majestic route lave 4 of them as it is-out of remaining 12 buses extend it by to 3 routes-one towards Malleshwaram, one towards Bellary road and one towards Rajajinagar-that case we get 4 buses per route-take 4 buses from those routes and extend it to route the JP nagar route-buses wont get reduced and even in case of jam on one side the buses from other side will get on and so the gap time can be reduced
2. Extend the short routes: Eg: 215CA from Jayanagar to Jambusavari dinne-it can be extended to Jigani or bannerghatta providing good connectivty from Jayanagar to Bannerghatta or so
3.Similar to "G" services start "Y" and "M" services to the 10 routes-Y services from Yeshvantapur Rly station and M services from MCTC to the 10 routes(Mysore road can be exempted from M and Tumkur road from Y since they have good connetivity)
4. "G" routes can be extended across-Eg: G4 can run upto Indiranagar or Jeevanbhimanagar instead of starting from Brigade road. Or some can just be extended across the city
5. Re-route/re-number the existing ones-Eg: 1 from jayanagar to yeshvantapur, 7 from jayanagar to Domlur etc can once again be brought back helping in saving time-same must be re-routed-1 via Townhall and swastik, 7 via Dairy circle in route of K-3 etc-no need of round about routes-
6. For "Y" and "M" services the time of departure must be regulated just like the BIAS services with a time keeper round the clock
7. Buses which get extended after majestic as in 1 can run via the Railway station road instead of entering into and exiting out of majestic to suit passengers preferring trin-bus need not enter the station-can just stop outside
Well the abover were just my way of what could be done-we can get more such ideas from our members here
great to knw that you got my idea,
shashi kumar y - 8 December, 2010 - 15:29
That's right Sir. As I have been using the (BTS &BMTC) from 1990's and residing in southern banagalore, I have come up with certain routes...
Sir, why can't we meet up when you are free. I'd be glad to meet people like you.
