Dear all

"Innovate or perish" has become the present day Mantra.  This post is to invite Prajegalu to post their innovative ideas that may make the life of citizens that much easy to live by developing some simple living and high thinking solutions to our daily problems and also help the authorities to look at them as best practices and for adopting them for their replicable, sustainable and economical quality.

A few suggestions before posting - subjects may be from A to Z but with substance:

As we are all aware, a search in google with the word 'innovations' may give us a million sites to browse;  providing such links may not be idealistic for Prajas who do not have that kind of patience and perseverence and time.

Prajegala own innovative ideas with enough background material  having experimented the same at grassroots level and gained some experience would be much appreciated.  Succint postings may be appreciated by all.

To start with here is my sample posting:  Whenever my nose is running wild due to cold, I have taken a few Tulasi leaves, mint leaves mashed them in my palm and inhaled the wonderful smell.  Even now I do that.  In a few minutes the nose stops running and if this is repeated once in two hours, it would help you to feel much better.

Further, some ideas may be fantasies and it may not be possible to experiment them at our backyards, then such posts may be posted in a nutshell so that further discussions or questions may involve detailed posts by prajas.  This innovative idea may culminate into a simple solution for a global problem like climate change?!!

We are all innovators and let us immortalise our innovative thoughts through Praja.

COMMENTS

Killing two birds with one stone - I have experimented and found it immensely satisfying. I conveyed my innovative experiment to Mr.Zenrainman, the RWH guru and Mr.RK Chary who have commended the idea.

Idea I have adopted is to get clean boiled drinking water through solar water heater and also save gas/electricity being used for cooking purpose - simple conditions apply:

condition No.1: Your sump and overhead tanks must be clean.

Condition No.2: Your solar water heating system must be fitted with an emmersion heating system (generally all solar water systems come with this attachment to enable users to switch on the heating element in case there is not enough sun shine).

How beneficial?

India, particularly the southern peninsual States have at least 250 days of bright sunshine. By tapping this infinite energy, we can save the world from climate change, global warming / global dimming and other hazards that have been predicted within the next 7 years.

(1) Get Clean drinking water and ensure elders and childrens good health: Through solar water heating system on our roof, we get hot water for bathing.  Invariably we get 'almost boiling' water when there is good sunshine. To be doubly sure, I switched on the heating element for just 5 minutes for ensuring the boiling point so that I get clean water.  Stored them in clean vessels and all members of our household are happy our health is safeguarded to that extent, instead of drinking the unclean water that comes through our taps.

(2) Save Gas/electricity: Ladies in the house are ready for cooking after necessary initial preparations like cutting vegetables and rice cooking etc., they can use this boiled solar heater water and thereby reduce that much of gas/electricity that is  needed for bringing the water content in the cooker or vessels to boiling point..

(3) This third benefit is optional for those who are struggling to collect and store water from the taps that trickles at odd hours:  They need not anymore and can have good sleep without disturbance.  Benefit (1) above ensures that clean boiled drinking water will be available and after a few hours, it becomes cool enough and my experience is that the cooled water does not have any change in its taste.

(4) Stored water will be clean enough for days and no sediments were found even after storing for three days.  Change the water according to your needs.

Family health, money, less consumption of scarce energy are all ensured through this innovative idea.  Enjoy.   Nothing commercial about this. It is free.  Users are the winners and their contribution towards climate change would be a plus point.

Good, But....

RKCHARI - 6 November, 2009 - 01:57

Yes Sir, I do reiterate that there is really nothing like drinking boiled water and if the boiling can be done through solar energy, even better.

However, please remember that if the water, sourced from borewells or supplied by BWSSB has chemical contaminants like arsenic, fluoride, nitrates, sodium, lead and iodine etc, boiling the water will not eliminate them.

Boiling water is best for elimination of pathogens.

One reason why people are lazy to boil is that it does take quite a bit of time to cool it. And in summer months, first cooling it and then placing bottles of cooled water inside a fridge is that much more of an disincentive.

Modern technology has invented desk top systems which actually produce deionised water which makes water as good as it can get. Let us hope someday we in Bengaluru can actually open the tap and drink water straight from it without any treatment / expense etc. That would be ideal, would it not?

ThanQ Mr.RKC and...

/BWSSB (supplied water) has chemical contaminants like arsenic, fluoride, nitrates, sodium, lead and iodine etc, boiling the water will not eliminate them.  Boiling water is best for elimination of pathogens/

We have been living with such mixed water for decades from BWSSB water and the modern tech water deionising gadgets cost a fortune and are not within the reach of even the middle income group people, leave alone those depending upon tap water. Moreover, the service providing stakeholder is guilty of supplying such chemicals mixed water; who has to bell the cat?  Classic example: Flouride effect on deformed limbs in  some villages in north karnataka - for generations they are suffering but what has been done?

 My two paise -

E-coliforms in various sires in drinking water are the culprits for creation of pathogens that affect our intenstines, stomach disorders etc., particularly childrens' delicate health and by adopting the above innovative solar heater boiled water consumption method, if we can eliminate the water born deadly bacterial content and safeguard ourselves, will we not be wise enough for having adopted  time tested method of 'prevention is better than cure' ?

Simple living and high thinking

psaram42 - 6 November, 2009 - 10:20

Innovation is the present day mantra. No doubt it sounds good pandering to ones ego. However there is something basically wrong in "innovate or perish".

Innovate and perish may be the correct mantra in present day context.

1.       Invention of the wheel leading to many innovations was a tragedy.

2.       We need to device machines (with wheels?) to exercise. (Cycling)

3.       We are desperately trying to proliferate to other planets as our seat is getting hotter on earth

4.       Our planet is on the verge of suffocating rather than being invigorating as of short time before.

The wisdom of learned thinkers is something much better to pursue perhaps. Living naturally is what is important. It means refrain innovating to only live. Live better (In harmony with nature) is perhaps more appropriate and urgent.

Scientist Sir,

/I feel funny and proud at times of my Designation "Scientist" in NAL and ADE/.

Remember your above post?   Going by your thoughts in this post, feraris should have been running on square wheels ?

It is said that great achievements that are leading mankind towards new horizons were mere thoughts once upon a time in the minds of somebody.

You still have that ' intensive scientific temperament and knowledge about hot airo- dynamics'.  May be, if you open your memory cells, who knows you may post an innovative idea about an aeroplane landing without wheels.

Please take the subject seriously - what we need is realistic postings not otherwise.

psaram sir, hope this gives you some idea about 'innovate or perish'.

bottom line: let us make life that much comfortable with what is around us with our innovative thinking..

Eating quickly can make you overeat

Gorging on your favourite meal can make you overeat, say researchers.

The research team from Laiko General Hospital in Athens, Greece, has found that eating quickly, as compared to slowly, curtails the release of hormones in the gut that induce feelings of being full.

The decreased release of these hormones can often lead to overeating.
“Most of us have heard that eating fast can lead to food overconsumption and obesity, and in fact some observational studies have supported this notion,” said Dr Alexander Kokkinos, lead author.

“Our study provides a possible explanation for the relationship between speed eating and overeating by showing that the rate at which someone eats may impact the release of gut hormones that signal the brain to stop eating,” Kokkinos added.

Here is a link to my small article in Kaaranji - Bilingual fortnightly Newsmag 15-31 May 2009 - click on English pages on home page.  I have also discussed about why we are breathing less and not filling our lungs to its capacity - syndrome of inhaling polluted air etc., and how to overcome.

Happy eating - try eating with your eyes closed and concentrating on what is going on in your mouth - I am doing it and enjoying it and many have given a feed back that they are now eating with peace and are enjoying consuming comparatively less food but more contentment and feeling less heavy after meals.
