silkboard - 3 January, 2010 | Bangalore | BMTC | Bus | Transportation | public transport | Bus Day

4 of us had a quick meeting yesterday (over skype, that is Praja style :) ) and here is what we talked:

First thing - we need help, involves mostly phone/online work, so wont take much of your time.

  • Goal/One line description: Take the bus to work. If you didn't, tell us why (via an online survey)
  • Target Audience: Tech, car/bike people, younger crowd (those who don't usually consider the bus for daily commute)

Here is the tentative workplan:

  • Prepare a list of 5 crisp things we need from BMTC them to pitch in with for bus day. Ex:
    • Local shuttles to 3-4 selected job areas, 8-10 AM, 6-8 PM
    • Special Phone Number for route information
    • Flyer inside/outside of all Volvo buses
    • Big10/Volvo TTs to hand Survey form that day
  • Get Traffic Police on board, be clear on 5 crisp things they should help with. Ex:
    • Managing local shuttles on the day
    • Hand out survey flyers/cards to Car Drivers at 5-6 signals
  • Identify 3-4 tech areas, and connect with the respective industry associations. Help needed from them
    • Mass-mail to employees in their companies
    • Help with loca shuttle arrangements for the day
    • Run Special Bus route information Kiosk for a week before Feb 4.

Relatd work for us (project members - need more volunteers join in if you want to help)

  • Publicity
    • A catchier name for the event ("Take the bus" good enough?)
    • Online survey and event page
    • Prepare a template email to be posted on NGO email lists and company BBs. (Need help here from people who can post on their company bulletin boards etc)
  • Coordinate with BMTC/Traffic Police, basically, be in communication with them on the help they will be giving for the event
  • Finalize 4 tech job areas, and figure out ways to connect to associations (ORRCA etc)Current candidates
    • Bagmane
    • Domlur/Inner Ring Road
    • Intel Area (ORRCA)
    • think more
  • Get other NGOs etc on board for
    • either help with logistics or,
    • they may have the audience we want to reach

Suggestion is to have 2 surveys?

kbsyed61 - 5 January, 2010 - 15:26

SB,

If I am interpreting the minutes correctly, suggestion is to have 2 surveys, i.e. One for Pre-Event and other for Post-event.

This makes sense as it will help gather required information. I may suggest the following questions for the Surveys:

  • Pre-Event Survey (Short One)
  1. Are you aware of the Feb 4th 'Take the Bus' campaign?
  2. Would be taking the Bus on Feb4th for the office/business?
  3. If NOT, tell us why? (With a list of 6-7 choices)

Objective - Get the top 3 reasons for which people don't prefer travelling by BUS for their daily commute. BMTC can make an effort to address these atleast for the camapign.

  • Post Event  Survey (Longer One)
  1. Were you aware of Feb 4th - Take the Bus Campaign?
  2. Did you take the Bus on Feb 4th?
  3. If NOT, why? (6-7 Choices)
  4. If YES, which service did you take? (Regular, RedBoard, Atal, BIG-10, Volvo, BIAS)
  5. Did the commute was fast?
  6. Did the commute was less stressful?
  7. Did the traffic appeared less?
  8. How was the experience? (Excellent, Very Good, Good, OK, Not Good, Very Bad)
  9. Do you commute regularly by Bus?
  10. If not, would be considering to change over (From Car/Bike to Bus)?
  11. If NOT, tell us why?(6-7 Choices)
  12. Where do you Live (Locality Name)?
  13. Where do you work or own business (Locality Name)?

Objective(s):

  1. Get the level of travel experience on this Day?
  2. Compute the percentage of commuters willing to change over to PT?
  3. Top 3 reasons that discourages people to change over to PT
  4. Top 3 things that BMTC or PT system should work onto motivate non-bus commuters.

Is this look good?

No, just 1 survey should do

silkboard - 7 January, 2010 - 18:26

One survey, which runs 1 week before and after Bus Day. Will keep it simple (see another task I created for myself in ths project), idea would be to find top 3-5 reasons people don't take the buses for their commute.

Once we get good numbers to take the survey, we will submit the results to BMTC to request action at least on top 2-3 items.

Today, Sat Jan 9th, we had another round of quick voice chat session on Skype discussing issues around online campaign on Praja.

Points of discussion:

  • Title for the Campaign Home Page Banner  - Consensus on SB's suggestion for 'Take The Bus'.
  • Hashed out the initial layout for Home Page - Very similar to Empower LA campaign page.
  • Plan to have the campaign pages online by Mon/Tuesday
  • Pla also to have Kannada version of the Main theme.
  • Online Survey - Consensus on 2 step, 3-4 question poll running upto the event.
  • Comprehensive one for the Post Event measuring the event success parameters.
  • Every week one question would make up the poll and would be visible on Praja HP and Take the Bus HP. As weeks progresses, these questions will get added to the list, but only one poll question appear on Home Pages.
  • Plan to arrange a meeting with BMTC CTMO

Stay tuned for more announcements.

NOTE: All are welcome to join the 'Take the Bus' campaign and contribute to the cause.

Hello,

The main problem for a person who doesnt use the bus is to be able to easily find the correct bus route number from his/her house to the office and back.

There doesnt seem to be any easy / handy online resources to find this. I checked the BTIS web site. ITs ok but doesnt give the timings/ frequency for buses.

I feel this will be the biggest block to people using the BUS on feb 4th. We could may be have the BMTC folks help us in helping people plan their trips (atleast on Feb 4th).

Absent timetable

idontspam - 10 January, 2010 - 12:29

I checked the BTIS web site. ITs ok but doesnt give the timings/ frequency for buses.

Right I checked that too... Timetable is conspicous by its absence. In addition I do not believe BTIS provides from stop to stop but rather from area to area. Which is fine but I need top be able to find the stop within the area also when I choose the bus number.

See BEST route finder

In contrast with what BMTC has done with www.bmtcinfo.com  please check out BEST.

http://www.bestundertaking.com/transport/index.htm

For each route it gives a list of stops, fare between two stops, first bus timing, last bus timing and approximate frequency.  Route maps can also be accessed.

BMTC should have left the old site stay till they fully updated all route details onto the new site.  Even now Vajra timings are not accessible.
