Better days ahead for KR Puram railway station

The much needed upgrading of the platforms at K R Puram railway station is all set to be completed in a fortnight.

In the pipeline is an extension of its platforms, and expansion of the station’s coach handling capacity from the present 19 to 24 coaches.

Anil Kumar Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager, South Western Railways, told Deccan Herald: “Presently all trains stopping at KR Puram have 24 coaches, but the platforms could accommodate only 19. This results in about four bogies being left out without a platform for passengers to alight. Within the next 15 days, all 24 can be handled.”

The Railways, he said, has also tried to address the issue of the lack of proper catering facilities at the station.

A food plaza is now being constructed on the first floor of the station building and will shortly be thrown open to the public.

The expansion has been taken up at an approximate cost of Rs 40 lakh, according to Agarwal.

However, he ruled out any expansion of the railway station itself due to lack of land on either side of the railway station.
But, despite the efforts taken by the Railway authorities, the station has been under tremendous pressure due to growing footfalls and increasing train traffic.

“The station handles over 30 trains everyday, but neither the width of the platforms nor the capacity of the overbridges is in proportional to the growing number of passengers.

The overbridge is usually packed with commuters struggling to make their way through; the added problem is the poor infrastructure outside the station,” said a railway personnel at the station.

The railwayman also complained of a growing security scare at the station as less than ten Railway Security personnel (RPF) are placed there. “We understand the station is relatively small but ten personnel is a pity,” noted the railway insider.

Besides their complaints of lack of water, hygiene and toilets at the station, passengers seemed highly irritated with the inconvenience caused outside the railway station. Savitri Suresh, a resident of Marathahalli, said: “I get off at this station as it is close to my house. But trying to make your way through the traffic at the junction is a major hassle.”

One side of the sling bridge at KR Puram is always packed with buses which take a long time to make their way. Quizzed about this problem, M A Saleem, Commissioner of Police, Traffic, said his department has chalked out a ‘Traffic Intervention Plan’ to resolve the issue.

The plan, he said, was framed two years ago after which the bridge was handed over to the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA). Saleem hoped it would be implemented at the earliest.

This place is gonig to be major transit  hub for Bangalore either by road /  rail / metro.  So in such case station infrastructure need to be revamped with major investment like  Rs 5 - 10 Crore for FOB & further extending beyound the ORR,  proper reservation counters,  parkig facility may be multilevel  & resturents above the Platforms as you will not get any good  hotels near by KR Puram station within 3 / 4 Kms

Railway Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Sunday said that the work on the underpass between KR Puram and Whitefield will be completed within two months.

Speaking after inspecting the KR Puram overbridge, he said for the last three years the railway underpass project was in a limbo and to facilitate motorists, the work would be put on a fast track.

Former KR Puram MLA Nandish Reddy discussed traffic issues and requested the minister, who is also the local MP, to link the existing skywalk to the foot-over-bridge of the KR Puram railway station.

“The railway quarters near the railway station is in a dilapidated state. The railway land on which the 28 staff quarters stand, could be used to widen the road at KR Puram,” Reddy suggested.

Gowda said that a meeting of the officials of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and Railways will be held to discuss the issue. Facilities like toilets, rest rooms, etc, will be upgraded at the KR Puram railway station and the Railway officials will inspect the station on Monday (November 3).

Another skywalk will be built near the KR Puram railway station to help pedestrians, the minister added.
