So Indian Railway will spend nearly Rs 8000 crore  on upgradation of subruban  rail coaches but when it comes to Bangalore,  every thing will have loss.

Even I was checking their are 9000 coaches of EMU / MEMU / DEMU deployed by Indian Railway as of now,  and SWR  has just 50 of them ( ie 0.5% of total )

Will Railway Minister change the  Trend for the SWR / Bangalore

This report was submitted in June 2012  On Railways :

8.6 Leasing of railway land : Page : 76

8.6.1 Suburban stations provide an excellent opportunity for management of the precious land resources of Railways in urban areas. A standard template can be developed for redesign and redevelopment of the stations that maximizes the comfort for commuters and create space for premium retail in station premises

9.9.2 Passenger:  Page 89

Conversion of all stopping passenger trains to EMUs/DMUs or railcars; invitation to state governments to manage uneconomic and unpatronized services

10.6 Urban Transport:  Page : 95

MRVC in Mumbai and MMTS in Hyderabad are two successful models for financial participation and cooperation with State Governments. Other states need to be engaged for similar initiatives. Viable cost sharing arrangements for both infrastructure and rolling stock investment and management of commuter operations need to be configured. It is envisaged that over the next 20 years IR‘s share of expenditure (@ 50%) in augmentation of urban networks would amount to Rs.3000 crore per annum or roughly Rs.60,000 crore. In addition, two elevated rail corridors using the existing right of way of railways in both Western and Central Railways in Mumbai (Churchgate-Virar and Mumbai VT to Karzat) costing approximately Rs.40,000 crore could be implemented through PPP along with Viability Gap Funding. Similar other projects in Mumbai and other cities will come up in future. It is estimated that an investment of the order of 2,00,000 crore would be required on this account.

This report has covered very well on the Subruban Transport and Role of Railways.

EMU Coaches : 7793  and DEMU : 824  as on 31st March'2012  are running accross India under Indian Railway

http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/railwayboard/uploads/directorate/stat_econ/pdf/YEAR_BOOK_ENG_2011_12/8.pdf

During 2012 -13  and 2013-14,  they will be adding minimum 700 Coaches of EMU and  150 Coaches of DEMU to their rolling stock.

Out of these figures,  Bangalore has just 50 Numbers including MEMU and DEMU.  Why is that Railway wants money from GOK when IR itself has not  deployed sufficient coaches for Bangalore like DEMU, MEMU & EMU.  By now Bangalore should have 150 EMU coaches,  250 DEMU coaches.

These details are very good and lot of info on the performance and usage given

PUNE 12/03/2013
Pune-Lonavla EMU train service completes 35 yrs

The electrical multiple unit (EMU) local train service for the Pune-Lonavla route completed 35 years on Monday, a small landmark which went unnoticed by the suburban railway commuters as they went about their work, travelling on the very same trains. It was on March 11, 1978, that the Central Railway introduced the EMU local trains on the Pune-Lonavla section. The EMU services until then were operational only in Mumbai and other metros.

Before the EMU service was introduced between Pune and Lonavla, commuters travelled in regular second class compartment trains. The EMU service helped commuters travel between the two places in far less time as compared to the regular trains

At present, the EMU locals make 40 trips, some of which are between Pune and Talegaon. Two trips originate and terminate at Shivajinagar. Three years ago, the railways replaced 9-car trains with 12-car trains which also benefitted commuters.

Indian Rlys-BHEL sign MoU to establish MEMU coach factory in Bhilwara

Indian Railways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) to set up a Rs10bn ($184.7m) mainline electric multiple unit (MEMU) coach factory at Bhilwara in Rajasthan, India.

The coach factory is intended to meet the demand for faster local and suburban trains in the country.

Under the MoU, BHEL will bear the complete cost and will be responsible for the construction of the MEMU coach production facility.

Around 200 acres of land will be provided by the government of Rajasthan for the construction of the new plant, and the Ministry of Railways will give assured off-take orders to BHEL to make the project viable.

Following completion, the new MEMU manufacturing facility will be capable of producing 400 coaches per year.

Equipped with engines on both sides, the MEMU trains will be capable of operating in both directions.

Each nine-coach train can carry about 1,800 passengers; each coach has seating capacity for 100 people and space for a similar number of standing passengers.

Compared to conventional loco-hauled passenger trains, the MEMU trains have higher passenger carrying capacity and higher average speed.

Why GOK and IR sign MoU with BEML to supply MEMU / DEMU / EMU coaches for Bangalore & other towns of Karnataka

Sanjeev,

Thanks buddy for spending time to get these details and it once again demonstrates the utter neglect of state railway needs from Railway board to SWR Zonal railways, Railway Ministry to State government. In a nutshell every body is responsible for such a abysmal state of railways in the state.

Regarding the question of why GOK can't sign a MOU to obtain more MEMUS/DEMUS for Bangalore?

Answer to that lies in

  1. what is the plans for railways in the state and Bangalore? For today, next 5 years and next 10 years.
  2. Who charts the plans for railways in the state? IR, SWR or GOK?

The RTI responses from SWR divulges its role and efforts to above questions. Based on those RTI responses, it was clear that SWR hasn't plan anything for the state or for that matter to Bangalore. They seems to be in the mode of "Operations" only and having very little to plan for expansion and modernization of the infrastructure.

All the additions, new lines, new trains etc have been part of that messy political favors from Indian Railways. When other states were getting their due share, states like Karnataka were given some pittance.

All these years we all were blaming Railways/Center for step motherly treatment for railway infrastructure. Now that A Kannadiga is at the helm of affairs, it is to be seen how much he could do it for Karnataka?

More prudent would be, Shri. Kharge giving different direction to the working of railways. It would make more sense, going forward, to let the state governments to plan for railways in their own state with 50% - 50% partnership with the center. Rather than Railway minister making decisions to add new lines or new train, let the state decide what is needed? Only than we will see some sanity in the railway expansion across the country.
