Why are our cities suffering?

mcadambi - 12-DEC-2008

My take on why local level governance in cities like Bangalore and Mumbai are suffering while thriving in cities like New Delhi and to a lesser extent, Chennai.

Any good city needs local governance. This means having a strong mayor council in place and using revenues generated by the city to a substantial extent for the city's needs.

Vasanth - 12-DEC-2008

What should astound us is not the crisis, nor its scale or its devastation, but the response of our financial and political managers.

Obama win - whats' in it for Bengaluru

mcadambi - 5-NOV-2008

The recent win of Senator Barack Obama has certainly changed the core nature of the United States. That an African American could be elected to the Presidency is a far contrast to the time before 1965 when African Americans could not even vote.

navshot - 29-OCT-2008

I always wondered what is the real cost of things we buy. I realized, you can buy an LED torch for Rs. 25! How does it work out? Bill of materials should be less than Rs. 10 and labour another Rs. 5! Wow!! We usually push it aside saying "Chinese", as though its a complete explanation. But is the real cost of the product? I always wondered there has to be more to it - the hidden costs.

Learn from past mistakes and move on

murali772 - 19-OCT-2008

The recent convulsions in the international financial markets have provoked an unseemly amount of gloating on the part of many in the developing world. What worries me, though, is the number of people in India who are saying similar things. "See, we were right in opposing all this liberalisation," one told me.

Mangalore Real Estate - Looking Up

Naveen - 15-OCT-2008

Real Estate prices in Mangalore have been increasing by leaps & bounds. An article in TOI today (15th/Oct) states that several 1-crore-plus apartment blocks are being constructed with heavy demand. This is astonishing since all Metros are facing a slump & prices have in fact dropped in certain areas, such as Whitefield in Bangalore.
