Sustainable water supply for Bangalore

s_yajaman - 11-MAR-2009

Bangalore has always faced chronic water shortages.  Back in 1981 when the population was 2.9 million.  In 1991 when the population was 4.5 million.  And in 2008 when the population is some 7 million.   I don't think there ever has been a time when we have had daily water.   The past few years have seen a construction boom that has added to the strain on the w

Ground water scarcity

chetana kolli - 10-MAR-2009

According to officials from Department of Mines and Geology, the groundwater situation is in a critical condition in Bangalore. The situation has worsened in the last three years. The average annual rainfall in the district is only 600 mm to 700 mm per year. Because of the drought in 2001, 2002 and 2003, groundwater recharge has been very low!! ******This is alarming*******.

I wonder why our government or our educated bangaloreans want to do nothing about it. Yes the government probably has a rule that Rain water harvesting(RWH) facility is compulsory in apartments and so on.... but who is monitoring it????  The apartment I live in does not implement RWH... Its a shame that the governing body is unable to enforce this..

BWSSB - current projects and progress updates

zeitgeist - 20-DEC-2008

From a BWSSB perspective, I found 3 critical projects that we need to track the progress of:

Tata arm bags Mysore water supply project

silkboard - 4-DEC-2008

This piece of news must be noted, its significant. Mysore city corporation (MCC) is inviting a Tata arm to form the largest water supply PPP project in the country. Read the press release directly on Tata group's website. Here are some key points worth your time:

Taking Rain Water Harvesting more seriously

mcadambi - 22-NOV-2008

It is good that the BWSSB has finally realised that only about 50% of it's current water supply is metered and billed for. It is equally good to note that it has come down heavily on IBC Knowledge Park (the building hosting Accenture et al) on Bannerghatta Road for water theft.

Can someone organize a meet with BWSSB

silkboard - 3-NOV-2008

Plenty of transportation going on around here. One Bangalore public body that needs more attention on Praja is BWSSB. Of special interest to us should be their ambitious "Cauvery Water Supply Scheme Stage IV Phase - II to bring in 500 MLD Potable Water". I picked the title up from BWSSB's current projects page. Newspapers carry very little updates (I mean conslidated updates) on this project which is worth Rs 3383 crores. Receipt of bids was due on 26 September, wonder what happened.

Water water everywhere

silkboard - 20-OCT-2008

Did you too notice a spate of water supply related news and announcements recently? Perhaps some influential  individual or minister has water on his mind. Have a look:

Power and water connections only after BBMP approval

Aspiring house owners, beware. It would be best to stick to the sanctioned building plan, as even the smallest deviations in the form of setbacks in front, rear, left or right side of the building, height of the structure or number of floors, could leave the building in darkness and without water.

Voices From The Waters

murali772 - 22-AUG-2008

Voices From The Waters is a water film festival in Bangalore, India, currently in its third edition. The first edition of the festival was held in 2005 followed by the second in 2007.
