Right to response in English, an official language of GoK

murali772 - 24-DEC-2010

What is clearly noticeable, of recent, particularly after the RTI usage has become quite extensive, is the mis-use of Kannada by government officials to deny information, through plain obfuscation (This is apart from other subtle, and not-so subtle, ways of denying information being adopted - click h

Govt proposes new RTI rule: Ask, but only in 250 words, on only one subject

shekhar_mittal - 14-DEC-2010

The government has proposed new rules that require a Right to Information (RTI) application to be restricted to 250 words and only one subject. There’s no word cap currently, and applicants can seek information on any number of subjects in a single application.

LOCAL Scams RTI and political activism

Public Agenda - 23-NOV-2010

Seems quite amazing that since 2 1/2 years and even before the Govt has sunk in land scams and we all knew this from the politicians affidavits in elections but the lid was blown by the former CM and political opponents and RTI activists.

In the emergency how many more people were on the streets

Some happy developments on the RTI front

murali772 - 17-OCT-2010

Your access to information will get a tad easier with the state planning to bring in a law for proper maintenance of all public records. Based on a recommendation by the Karnataka Information Commission (KIC), the state will rope in Karnataka Public Records Act to make public information more accessible to the 'aam aadmi'.

Right to Information act (RTI) and transparency

psaram42 - 16-AUG-2010

In this age of the internet and exponential growth of the web, the RTI act 2005 should have been at best, a history by now. It is amazing to read the RTI 2005 document available on the web. It creates posts like Chief Information Commissioner and what not, for providing the so called information. I admit I could not, nor was I interested in reading this kind of document.

Want to know how a govt dept prioritizes things?

silkboard - 15-AUG-2010

Happy I'day to all. Got a proposal for an RTI gig. Would take IDD (Infrastructure Development Department of Govt of Karnataka, currently headed by Mr V Madhu) only as an example, but we could pick any other busy government department as a target. The idea is to find out how the dept decides on the priority of projects it has on hands.

Right is there; but, no information

murali772 - 14-JUL-2010

Following (in italics) are the relevant excerpts from the New Indian Express report:

The government may have enacted a law empowering citizens to demand information from public authorities, but five years later many government departments are yet to take the “first step” towards proactive disclosure. Section 4(1)(b) of the RTI act mandates that all authorities under the purview of the law must index, catalogue and computerise official records to be easily accessed by the people. So far, however, few departments have paid heed to the provision, says K A Thippeswamy, Karnataka State Information Commissioner. The progress, he said, has been “almost negligible”. “They (departments) do not even have a record room to keep  documents,” he said. “They were supposed to do it within six months of the Act coming into force. But it’s been five years and they are yet to do it.’’
