Quote from article about kannada display boards by Nov 1

"On Oct. 31 night, around 10,000 KRV workers will go round the city checking display boards of shops and if they find English- only boards, they will either bring them down or blacken them."

Volunteers for translating the British Highway Code

asj - 10-OCT-2008

Dear all, A short while ago I applied to the crown copyrights permission to translate the British Highway Code in to Indian languages. They have granted that permission. India does not have an equivalent resource and it may be great to translate this material.

Practical governance - need of the hour!

nijavaada - 12-SEP-2008

We've all been evidence to this. All of us might have stumbled upon this at some point of time.

India is a union of linguistically formed states, and hence governance in India is a matter of managing people of different languages/identities. Even though these remain written truths, there're subtle ways in which our identities have been forcibly compromised with, and attempts to mask various identities under one off identity have been made almost everywhere in the past 61 years of India's existence.

Tatasky - Eng, Hindi, Tamil, ashtay!

swamy - 31-AUG-2008

Watch tatasky? Sit and watch cartoons with your children. Press green button on the remote. You can now select the audio in your favirote language. This option is not available most of the time. But whenever it is available, Engilsh, Hindi and Tamil, ashtay! No kannada, yaake?

Tatasky doesn't want to do good business in Karnataka?

Tatasky thinks only Tamil speaking population are demanding, baaki janaa not?

Tatasky has competetion from Sun, which is based in Tamilnadu, so care more for Tamil than Kannada, or Malayalam?

Unaided schools to teach kannada

swamy - 6-AUG-2008

How is everyone seeing this new move from Unaided schools. KUSMA (association of unaided schools) has made kannada teaching mandatory for ICSE/CBSE schools. Quoting from this newindpress article:

"Bangalore is New to the Kannada Experience"

tsubba - 15-JUL-2008

Girish Karnad on his new play: “Bangalore is new to the Kannada experience, therefore, even-though you will find a rich Kannada tradition in writing, theatre, cinema and poetry until very recently you will find very little writing on Bangalore. Stories on the life in Bangalore — the stories of Jayanagar, RT Nagar and Indranagar are but stories not found on paper. Hence, I decided to base parts of the play in Bangalore to explore the conundrum”.

Why retain Kannada numerals?

murali772 - 4-JUL-2008

While the use of the Kannada script (but not on number-plates) does certainly contribute to the propagation of the language and thereby the culture, the numerals do not serve any such purpose at all. The regular 1,2,3 can as well be read ondu, eradu, mooru, so on, without in any way diluting the purity of the language, but in many ways simplifying life, particularly for the non-Kannadiga's who then have only to grapple with the jalebi's, the prospect of which is less intimidating.

Forcing medium of instruction - High Court verdict

What does praja say on the call made by the high court? Refer "kannada medium not must" for private schools.

Public Transport and Local Language (BMTC)

narayan82 - 20-JUN-2008

I'm sorry but Mr Murali's post on Autos seems to have diverted way beyond scope. Hence we now have two parallel topics running in the same post. Let us bring one here.

How important is to have Multi lingual Bus Boards? Can we do with just addressing the needs of the "local" population? How do we create a universal transport system.

Lets hear it from the Praje then..
