Urban Transportation reforms around the BMLTA concept silkboard - 2-JUL-2008
In the telecom space, you have TRAI which is a national level regulatory body. Rightly so, since telecom networks have national footprint through interconnections, it need not be looked at as a state subject. Drawing a parallel for our state, think of extending BMLTA concept - a Karnataka state land transport authority (KSLTA). Why so? Because we want efficient two or three change connectivity from Whitefield to Haradanahalli as well, and not just to Jayanagar or Malleswaram. Just like the primary schools, every region needs good connectivity. |
Bus services - a different approach murali772 - 1-JUN-2008
"Vayu Vajra I am told is very convenient - for 150 rupees - starts from Aishwarya stores - supposed to be at every half an hour - but that's not the case. I was told today morning that they have one at 3.40pm but when I reached I realised it got cancelled and the next one was only at 6.40 PM. |
Municipal workers to fine traffic violators? silkboard - 22-MAY-2008
Refer the news in papers today - "BBMP has warned residential and commercial complexes that don't allow visitor parking inside their premises. As per the byelaw, they must reserve 10% of the parking space for visitors". Now, see this development along with an interesting news reported this week (source biz-standard): "MP Govt has created Urban Transport Authority which will make local bodies and traffic police work together ... fine collected ... will be used to raise funds for better traffic management, more parking space ... so far, the police used to deposit fines in state treasury".

Dedicated bus lanes - a presentation for BBMP Naveen - 16-MAY-2008
I made a presentation yesterday to Mr.Subramanya (BBMP Commisioner) at his office about the single bus lane idea. He was quite interested and said he would discuss with his committee and revert. He also agreed very well that the solution was not to build or widen more roads or flyovers. He also mentioned some problems that are being faced with the underpasses construction on Bellary road - the actual costs were much higher than anticipated because numerous problems had cropped up - conduits for sewerage, water, telephone, electricity, etc that were marked incorrectly on admittedly very old drawings that now need to be re-aligned ! [Here is the presentation, prepared with a lot of help from folks and material here on Praja] |
BRTS – Certainly Possible & Can be Seamlessly Integrated too ! Naveen - 6-MAY-2008
Planning BRT Corridors along narrower
/congested roads & areas can be done by using up only one lane
about 12-ft wide for one-way flows whilst using a similar lane on a
different road for the return journey. This also has the advantage of
wider coverage thrown in for the benefit of commuters. On wider roads,
Syamese-twin pairs of bus-ways can be planned with overtaking facility
at some bus stops for express /skip-stop services (20 ft width corridor
would be required at bus stops for this, but they can be staggered on
up & down directions to prevent 40’ width of the road at any given
point from being used up).

Public transport (BMTC) - what is needed to improve it? Your thoughts s_yajaman - 22-APR-2008
One of the things that Bangalore lacks is a good integrated public transport system as of today. Namma Metro promises to improve things but is a few years away. Till then we depend on BMTC for public transport. BMTC has changed a lot over the last 5-6 years. It (at least according to the website) operates a fleet of 5000 buses and carries about 30 lakh passengers a day (if one person makes 3 trips a day - it is 3 passengers). however, it still has a long way to go. |
tsubba - 17-JAN-2008
Karnataka Government has begun work on the CTTP by starting
consultations with the Union Urban Development Ministry (UUD) on
implementing the plan. State additional chief secretary Niraja
Rajkumar, submitted the plan and made a detailed presentation to Union
Urban Development Secretary M Ramachandran on Jan 15, 2008. The plan
incldes various projects to be implemented in three phases -
2007-12, 2013-18 and 2019-24 at a total cost of 46,994 crore rupees. |
admin123 - 10-JAN-2008
Traffic is one thing and Public Transport another. Traffic is about moving vehicles, public transport people. Something like BTRAC is aimed at traffic management - wider roads, flyovers, signals an stuff. Enforcement on roads, how to drive etc are also more like traffic topics. Getting to know and discuss the upcoming BMLTA, tracking BMTC's efforts to enhance its services, and watching BMLTA, BMTC and Metro all work together to create public transport infrastructure - all this needs a dedicated 'forum' of its own. So, we have created a new high level project (see the list under "track projects') for the purpose. We expect that folks like Mr Muralidhar Rao, Sudhir, Vasanth, City.zen and others would contribute their awareness, knowledge and opinions there. Use the "Public Transport" label if you want your posts/threads to appear under this 'project'. |
tsubba - 6-JAN-2008
For a while we have been discussing the need for an integrated
authority to address issues of transportation and traffic. There is a
new authority precisely for this. Bangalore Metropolitan Land
Transport Authority (BMLTA). If that does not ring a bell, then you are
not alone. Chief secretary, A Ravindra, says it is the same with other
organizations that ought to be working with it. |
