When the “who’s who” of the secretariat are preferring quarantine services of private nursing homes and corporate hospitals over government hospitals, it remains a complex question in common people’s mind, whether it is worthwhile to visit a government hospital at all.

Green cess

murali772 - 11-JUN-2009

You’ve paid infrastructure and education cesses. Now, get ready to shell out a green cess of 5 paise per kWh electricity. If the Karnataka government has its way, for the first time, the state will levy this on industrial and commercial establishments to raise funds for renewable energy.

Power distribution to be privatised

murali772 - 21-MAY-2009

Taking a cue from its counterparts in Delhi and Mumbai, the state government is toying with the idea of handing over distribution of
power to private parties on a franchise basis. Currently, electricity supply companies (escoms like Bescom in Bangalore) do it.

"We are studying the Delhi and Mumbai models where private parties have been given franchises to distribute power. We propose to adopt such a model as part of power sector reforms,'' a senior energy department official said.

The move is seen as a bid to ensure better power supply at the consumer end and better revenue realization. "Once it's implemented, consumers will get uninterrupted power and it'll also lead to quicker repair of faults," the official claimed.

According to sources in the energy sector, the franchisee will purchase power from the state government (Karnataka Power Corporation) and sell it to consumers and will strengthen and maintain the distribution network. This system will not only address consumers' grievances but will also cut down the massive power pilferage, pegged at 22-27%.

Need private passenger trains in India

idontspam - 26-MAR-2009

When we have choice of interstate bus services, interstate and international airlines why dont we have the same choice in trains? IR can coexist with private train services and compete for passengers fair and square. There has to be a neutral regulator deciding on allocations. Choice will then become economic rather than Biharic.

Prashant.Murthy - 15-FEB-2009

Over the last 4 years I have been reading about articles in the news papers about the diminishing lakes in Blore. Once the city was proud to have hundreds of lakes, now has only 60+ lakes. I don't have exact statistics but what I know is Lake development Autority was once formed and they are doing the maintaining or for privatization of lakes.
