Creative agency to improve driver behaviour

silkboard - 20-JUL-2008

Spotted this interesting thing today. KRDCL is looking to hire a Creative Agency as consultant for spreading road safety awareness and improving road user behaviour in Bangalore. How much money is budgeted for this is not clear. Since KRDCL is putting this out, and not Traffic Police or BBMP, I am guessing this is part of the BTRAC-2010 (KRDCL is the nodal agency for it).

Here is the goal as listed in the document (click here to read) from KRDCL:

Driver Education DVD now available

asj - 7-JUL-2008

Dear all,

Some of you are aware that I have produced 17 driver education videos about a year ago. All videos are posted on Praja and can be seen online. The videos now have over 100,000 online views and are available on a DVD. Every week I get requests for the videos to be supplied as a DVD. Given that I am currently working abroad, it became very difficult to sustain sending out DVDs (over a hundred were sent out free).

How to make NH7 Safer

Photoyogi - 3-JUL-2008

I had the opportunity to drive down NH7 to the BIA last evening and again this morning. Some of the things that immediately struck me was that Yesterday, the taxis were driving at more reasonable speeds and why? At critical sections of the road there were these "interceptor" vehicles equipped with radar speed guns and were fining offenders on the spot.

I think that this definitely puts the fear into the drivers and will behave? Good going Bangalore Police may you be empowered further :-)

Meanwhile, NH7 turns a death trap

s_yajaman - 25-JUN-2008

NH-7 is turning out to be a complete death trap. On the way back from the airport last night, we reached Chikajala only to find traffic stopped. Heard an ambulance, etc.

Found out that we reached about 15 mins after a fatal accident - a hit and run. Apparently (and I don't know for sure) a City Cab had hit a pedestrian and sped off. The locals were furious and understandably. They had blockaded the traffic. They were taking all the Meru and City Cabs to one side and were asking the passengers to get off. They came to the window of each taxi that passed and said "Naale inda nidana (slow from tomorrow)".

Naan nimmana touch maadna? Tragic consequences.

s_yajaman - 5-MAY-2008

Challenge anyone driving fast in a residential area and chances are you will get this response - naan nimmana touch maadna (did I touch you?) as if that is the only measure of safe driving.

Here are the tragic consequences of this sort of attitude. One life snuffed out because of some idiot who thought that driving fast is his birthright and as long as he does not touch anyone (more precisely he has not hit anyone so far) he is driving perfectly safe. These people were not running across a road or crossing a highway. They were walking on a pavement in a residential area.

Veritable death-traps

The report about the car crash in Krishnagiri (on the Bangalore-Chennai express-way) resulting in the death of two young men, and serious injuries to a young lady, published in your columns on the 29th, under the caption 'car did 90 km in one hour', made extremely sad reading.

Dependability of BMTC in question

murali772 - 26-MAR-2008

Within the same week, there have been two instances of BMTC buses being involved in serious crashes, supposedly due to 'brake failure'. In one, the conductor died, even as many were injured, and quite seriously too, in both.

Dealing with in car condensation

asj - 19-OCT-2007

Video 17: Dealing with in car condensation Though weather changes are minimal in India, this does happen in winters and monsoon. Often this causes in-car condensation affecting the windscreen and visibility. Often drivers use a cloth when there are simpler ways. Last in the series, this video ends with some sundry rules all drivers must remember.
