New underpasses/flyovers on ORR - a suggestion

silkboard - 6-OCT-2008

Marathahalli UnderpassYou may have noticed that Outer Ring Road upgrade work is picking up serious momentum. Work on service lanes is in full swing, and it seems like survey work is on for the new underpass/flyovers as well. So if all goes well, we should have a nice six lane "corridor" from Hebbal to silk board junction. Good show indeed! At the same time, it'll be good to look ahead at the impact of this ORR upgrade project.

Probing public transport stats for Bangalore

silkboard - 15-SEP-2008

Last we heard (Mr Sharif may have told TOI), BMTC said that public transport accounts for 48% of trips in the city. Another stat from Ministry of Urban Development had put public transport's share in Bangalore to about 35%. So, there we have, a range of 35% to 48%, and we know that in Bangalore, public transport virtually equals BMTC.

Urban transportation - addressable market size: how big?

silkboard - 12-SEP-2008

Rushing to busI had asked this question at the TransInnova/ BMLTA summit yesterday, and didn't get a good answer, most likely because nobody had a number handy. Local urban transportation is a "problem", and problem equals "opportunity". Why is it that private players are not taking enough interest in lobbying to get access to this market? Policy hurdles would be one reason, but I am curious if the size of the market is being underestimated here. Lets do some numbers, simple and basic.

Do we need this?

Have you seen this one?

Apart from Volvo goody, here is something interesting and concerning.

A Rs 1,000-crore, 45-storey interchange terminal where BMTC, KSRTC and Namma Metro services would converge, would come up at the Majestic bus stand, the minister said and added that the construction work on it would begin shortly.

BMTC's business-oriented outlook

murali772 - 8-SEP-2008

To compensate for the losses in the regular operations, BMTC is now having to look at newer and newer avenues, though in the process they may be deviating totally from their original mandate. The increased contract services for schools and IT sector companies, etc are a part of all that.
