Keep the saarige, let go yelli-iddira tsubba - 21-JUL-2008Understanding competition as a/the solution for public transit. Muralidhar rao's praja post is a starting point for the discussion on competizing public transport. The other day, during the PTWG meeting, when the issue of the pathetic condition of BMTC's website and demise of yelli-iddira came up, he broke into an impassioned and yet articulate speech. I cannot recollect his exact words, but his basic point was that BMTC lacks any competitive or regulatory pressure and hence the pathetic state of those services. The only way to get service levels to improve is to open its domain for competition. I have heard his basic position many times, but to hear him make his case in person was a friends, countrymen and romans moment for me. In any case, his speech got me thinking ... |
Urban Transportation reforms around the BMLTA concept silkboard - 2-JUL-2008
In the telecom space, you have TRAI which is a national level regulatory body. Rightly so, since telecom networks have national footprint through interconnections, it need not be looked at as a state subject. Drawing a parallel for our state, think of extending BMLTA concept - a Karnataka state land transport authority (KSLTA). Why so? Because we want efficient two or three change connectivity from Whitefield to Haradanahalli as well, and not just to Jayanagar or Malleswaram. Just like the primary schools, every region needs good connectivity. |
Example of BMTC Local Shuttles for Bannerghatta Road bangalorean - 28-JUN-2008
Hello All, Here i am once again, i had promised long back to explore more on problems with BMTC in bannerghatta road. So here are some of the major problems. BMTC busses currently ply only from the main bannerghatta road and it does not penetrate the interiors of bannerghatta road. Interiors on either side of bannerghatta road is pathetic with no proper asphalt. It seems to me that no one has taken interest in improving the conditions these roads. Most of the roads have been occupied by petty shops making the interior existing roads small. |

BMTC Bus stops - Official and unofficial rangaraj - 5-MAY-2008
As i drive daily to work - (i live off Old Madras Road (OMR) and my workspot is near the Bangalore dairy), it is frustrating to see the haphazard bus stops of BMTC, that has a severe impact on traffic. Let me give a couple of examples in my route. |
Public transport (BMTC) - what is needed to improve it? Your thoughts s_yajaman - 22-APR-2008
One of the things that Bangalore lacks is a good integrated public transport system as of today. Namma Metro promises to improve things but is a few years away. Till then we depend on BMTC for public transport. BMTC has changed a lot over the last 5-6 years. It (at least according to the website) operates a fleet of 5000 buses and carries about 30 lakh passengers a day (if one person makes 3 trips a day - it is 3 passengers). however, it still has a long way to go. |

i have small suggestions the bus tickets issuedby BMTC may be in multiples of Rs 5 or Rs 10 but not odd figures like Rs6, Rs 13 , Rs 14 etc as this will cretae problem of change Srinath Heragu |
BMTC Suvarna peak hour service s_yajaman - 9-APR-2008saw this report on BMTC's long planned peak hour service. http://www.thehindu.com/2008/04/01/stories/2008040159230300.htm It was disappointing to see a good idea being executed badly. (Murali sir was not at all surprised!). If you see the routes almost all of them touch - Kempegowda Bus Stand. I thought that place was crowded as it is without another set of buses attempting to enter them. Have any of you (except Vasanth) been to Subhashnagar bus stand? There is log jam inside the bus stand and buses that are ready to go cannot leave because they are surrounded by other buses. |
Better Bussing For A Green Bangalore murali772 - 12-DEC-2007
There's no denying that the tree cover in Bangalore is being lost largely due to road widening. Road widening is necessitated due to unchecked growth and usage of private vehicles. To address this problem, you have to have excellent public transport services. METRO may be a solution. But, it is extremely expensive, and at best a solution in the long-term. BMTC cannot cope up with the needs, however much they may appear to have become efficient, which they are not and cannot be, as long as they continue to enjoy a monopoly status. The simple answer is to facilitate the entry of TVS kind of companies (my first exposure to TVS was as a bus service provider in the city of Madurai) into the fray. The present rules do not provide for that. It facilitates only the 'Sharma' kind of operations, which in turn only helps provide fodder for the die-hard opponents of the private sector. |
