indian - 30-MAR-2009

MoEF (Ministry of Environment & Forests) in a notification issued recently proposes to amend the EIA Notification in such a manner that it will negate the very purpose of the Notification, besides compromising human rights of hundreds of project affected communities and the ecological security of India.

Chipko..Appiko and now Bachhiko!?

blrsri - 22-FEB-2009

Development activities like building the metro always brings environmental issues along with them and tree cutting figures very prominently..Authorities take`refuge of quoting selective trimming of the trees and not necessarily bringing them down..

Lessons learnt - but the hard way!

Agara lake & S T bed trees 012.jpgI moved into an apartment complex in S T Bed layout, Koramangala, about 4 years back. The layout was developed by BDA over a decade back on Sinivagilu tank bed, quite as per the widely prevalent practice then. For a layout on a tank bed, the drainage work done by BDA was totally inadequate, and as a result, the asphalting on the roads progressively deteriorated, making the drive through the layout worse than a ride on a camel back.

Sankey Road to lose trees

mcadambi - 21-JAN-2009

The Arterial Sankey Road, from Cauvery Theatre Junction to Yeshwantpur Circle Junction is going to be widened and going to lose all the green cover it has. It is going to become a major disaster given that Sankey Tank and surrounding regions cannot withstand such a large amount of vehicular pollution.

How Wide is Wide?

Vasanth - 21-DEC-2008

Nomatter however the road is wide, there is always traffic jams. Still BBMP seems to have not analyzed the problem and expanding the roads by cutting trees and reducing pavements has become its endless project. Today morning I saw trees on the Maharani's College Road while getting down the Anand Rao circle which were 'alive' from 100s of years being cut to widen further. Already the road is 1 way and it is a 4 lane road. Why to loose our greenery unnecessarily. Also the pavements were narrowed still further. We all know, how matter the road is wide, still traffic will not reduce. Length of the jam decreases and width increases. We have seen the examples of Bangkok, as well as we have seen the roads of California. Its all so wide still there are lots of delays in traffic. Why to loose our precious trees which are seniors in terms of age for a foolish act of road widening which we all know is not going to give us any solution. Loosing the tree for a Metro Rail / Mono Rail is OK since it is minimal as well as it is definitely give us a solution. Still, alternative routes should be taken wherever possible to avoid tree cutting such as the case in Nanda Road.

Save these trees - road widening?

Rithesh - 20-OCT-2008

BBMP/BWSSB are at it again. I am surprised at the ease with which they go about cutting the trees.

This time it is the stretch of road between BDA junction and Cavery Theater junction (New Airport Road). Some one really very creative is at work here - they are finding new innovative ways to cut down trees and this time BWSSB has chipped in to help them.

In this particular case - BWSSB dug deep trenches just next to the trees (they are laying a pipe line). With in days most of the trees tilted dangerously towards the trench. A couple of days latter all these trees were cut down - may be citing treat to life and property. Surprise surprise, a few days latter, the foot paths are decreased and work is on to increase the width of the road - all this natak for a few extra feet of road (for a road which is already wide enough). Most of these tress were atleast 50-60 years old.

Petition against road widening

in place of Race Course, what?

murali772 - 4-AUG-2008

What's coming up in the place supposedly being vacated by the Race Course? According to a TOI piece sometime back, underground parking lots will be constructed. However, no mention has been made about the ground level: public space? shops and malls?

Shastri had brought this up in the passing in this comment where he had stated that:

According to this hindu story, there is no mention of an integrated transport hub. Apparently they want to keep the space as a open green space with an underground parking lot

The matter came up for discussion recently in a Yahoogroup, which I thought fit to migrate here

Tree Exchange

mcadambi - 23-JUL-2008

I was wondering, why not create an "Electronic Tree Exchange" right here on Praja. The aim of this should be simple - exchange trees between people instead of killing them outright.

For example, a mall feels having a fully grown Gulmohar tree is blocking it's access and wants to take it down.

But in another part of a city, a citizen has space for the tree in his/her plot. The mall can post details of the tree and the citizen interested could take it from the mall at the cost of the citizen or any other arrangment between the donor and taker.
