silkboard - 10-JAN-2008

I still remember the sign board BDA had put up onsite when construction began on Marathahhali bridge (here). Start 30-4-2006, finish 30-7-2006. Were they kidding - 3 months, thats it? Anyway. dates moved, fast forward to January 2008, and the word going around is that we may get the full six lane bridge done in a few weeks.

Of Traffic, Planning & BMLTA

tsubba - 6-JAN-2008

For a while we have been discussing the need for an integrated authority to address issues of transportation and traffic. There is a new authority precisely for this. Bangalore Metropolitan Land Transport Authority (BMLTA). If that does not ring a bell, then you are not alone. Chief secretary, A Ravindra, says it is the same with other organizations that ought to be working with it.

His observations about the systemic problems with BMLTA, gave an oppurtunity to consolidate the discussions we have had on this, along with the observations he has made. Read on & opine

BTRAC - smart traffic lights are coming

silkboard - 30-DEC-2007

Hope you still remember BTRAC-2010, the nice sounding traffic management project for Bangalore. Seems like KRDCL has started the process of putting up new traffic signals under this project. This bidding document talks of 204 locations for these signals. Thankfully, this document contains the specifications of these new signals as well, and they do seem smart - vehicle detectors, remote control from a Traffic Management Center, pedestrian crossings with audible alarms, and more. Have a look:

Prius not for India?!

blrsri - 19-DEC-2007

Wiki says for India's electricity generation we use: coal: 69.1%; oil: 5.4%; nuclear: 2.5%; gas:9.5%; renewable: 13.5% (.3% biomass)(2004) So using electric cars -> use more electricity -> Burining more coal -> pollute more Toyota thinks hybrid cars use in China would not reduce carbon emmissions, what would be the policy in India? So, we dont need the Reva's?

"Tata small car set to offer 25 kmpl mileage"!!

blrsri - 19-DEC-2007

KOLKATA: Ratan Tata and the Tata group have for months zealously kept a tight lid on the details of the Rs 1-lakh car that is slated to roll out of Tata Motors’ Singur factory in June 2008. But on Tuesday, the shroud came off in singular circumstances.

How do you react?

silkboard - 18-DEC-2007

[flickr-photo:id=2120083156,size=m][flickr-photo:id=2120084172,size=m] Before I start on a long rant with my reactions, thoughts and ideas, tell me this. How should one react or behave on seeing things like these? And what should change to prevent these drivers from resorting to these shortcuts?

School vans (Omnis) - a disaster waiting to happen

s_yajaman - 12-DEC-2007

When I go to drop my boys at school and pick them up, a familiar sight greets me - Maruti Omnis with about 12-15 kids in each of them. There is not even space to keep their bags inside the Omni and so they are on the roof. Many of these are with white boards and so possibly illegally being used for this. If this overloading is not enough, the way they are driven is horrific. I have seen them go at full speed, jumping lights, taking turns without slowing down, etc. Sadly it seems a matter of time before something serious happens.
