Imagine the noise if our new international airport had no escalators to take you up from check-in area to the departure hall? 'Super shoddy', 'oh these cheapos', coin-your-expletives, or 'like our station' right? Switch over to the City station, and remember how you lugged your stuff up the stairs from the platform to the footbridge and back down again. We can hear you say - there are porters to help. Why does the airport not save some money by arranging for 50-60 porters? Before this gets into socialism vs capitalism like arguments, analyze this. |

Government Education in Bangalore gowriv - 25-JUN-2008
At times it seems that Bangalore citizens have forgotten that their government schools exist. More than half of the schools in Bangalore are private unaided schools, while in the entire state of Karnataka, 81% of schools are government schools. Government schools are seen as a school of last resort, and face high dropout. Children who do survive government schooling often end up without basic skills -- reading, writing, and arithmetic. Still, there are more than 200,000 children attending government schools in our city. |

The 'Hasiru Usiru', along with a few other organisations, is organising a human chain to "Protect Our Lakes for Posterity" on Sunday, the 22nd June, at Agara lake, Koramangala.
Even with my not being against the Hebbal lake 'maintenance arrangement'(with the Oberoi's), I have signed their online petition, because I am dead against the Nagavara and Agara deals. |
murali772 - 16-JUN-2008The right of the pedestrian to use the pavements unhindered is sacrosanct which has been repeatedly echoed even by the highest court of the land. But lower courts grant stay orders whenever attempts are made (though half heartedly) to remove the footpath hawkers. These stay orders go unchallenged effectively. |
BIAL - The Absence of Design Feature/s Naveen - 12-JUN-2008
BIAL has been negatively criticized as "Shopping Mall", "Factory-Shed" or "Warehouse" from many quarters. The leading airports across the world such as Changi-Singapore, Lantau or Kaitak-Hongkong, Schipol-Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Heathrow-London, Dubai & the newer Swarnabhumi-Bangkok all include some design feature/s that leave a lasting impression on users. |

What was your experience like when you ran around to get your 3-4 year old admitted into pre-school or nursery? Leaving out those who could afford to pay and get into the 'top end' primary schools (money was the clear filter there), did the rest have good visibility into the criteria used to accept or reject their children? How many of you got real receipts for the entry/admission fee you paid? And if you hedged between 2-3 schools, and got admission into all, did you get your fees or deposits refunded in full? |
