Probing public transport stats for Bangalore

silkboard - 15-SEP-2008

Last we heard (Mr Sharif may have told TOI), BMTC said that public transport accounts for 48% of trips in the city. Another stat from Ministry of Urban Development had put public transport's share in Bangalore to about 35%. So, there we have, a range of 35% to 48%, and we know that in Bangalore, public transport virtually equals BMTC.

Urban transportation - addressable market size: how big?

silkboard - 12-SEP-2008

Rushing to busI had asked this question at the TransInnova/ BMLTA summit yesterday, and didn't get a good answer, most likely because nobody had a number handy. Local urban transportation is a "problem", and problem equals "opportunity". Why is it that private players are not taking enough interest in lobbying to get access to this market? Policy hurdles would be one reason, but I am curious if the size of the market is being underestimated here. Lets do some numbers, simple and basic.

FM Cariappa Road

tsubba - 10-SEP-2008

Ok, before we make suggestions, we need to be very explicit about what we understand about the road. Since, sri is the local malla complete with a high flung jeTTi and spread out rhetorical stance and all*, we start with what he said about this road. We keep in mind that beyond his generic description, which nevertheless gives us a feel for the road, we need explicit and detailed details. Srivatsa said:

BMTC's business-oriented outlook

murali772 - 8-SEP-2008

To compensate for the losses in the regular operations, BMTC is now having to look at newer and newer avenues, though in the process they may be deviating totally from their original mandate. The increased contract services for schools and IT sector companies, etc are a part of all that.

New Pedestrian Subways - Utility issues

Bengloorappa - 6-SEP-2008

BBMP is planning 6 new ped subways as per this piece of news (read here). I am trying to reason out in this post the utility of a ped "Subway" and low cost alternatives available to the BBMP.

Connecting the Bicycle dots - 'Build it and they will come'

Bengloorappa - 2-SEP-2008

Found an interesting article in Washington Post foreign service section about how some countries have adapted to Bicycles and how some others are on the path. It also holds out that research suggests that India and China cannot afford to not adopt the model.

Storm Water Drains and BBMP budget

Vehicles, animals and now people floating in rain water pools - Sound familiar?

Deja vu. Examples: Today's Deccan, Friday's Deccan

For once, let us forget what happens with the money spent. But what if the allocation was never spent? Attached PDF is an extract from BBMP's budget document.

Public Transport - Bus service algorithm / checklist

asj - 30-AUG-2008

My views on BRT have been known for a while on Praja.

I am not anti or pro any model. I believe a place has a thing and a thing has a place. First we must be able to justify BRTS on basis of need, then it should be implementable on given corridor (just being able to implement without demonstrated need is no good).

Here is an algorithm which I would use -
