Understanding law and order + policing

silkboard - 31-JUL-2008

[Forked out of this thread on id-cards] Talking law and order in general, the mess is probably deeper than the issue of id-cards: there are a lot of things involved. Lets try analyze this if we can. Let me put a common sense based list of things on the table as I see them:

Traffic police - why stand and deliver?

silkboard - 5-JUN-2008

Was driving my F-I-L's Santro the other day when I was stopped by one of those police parties. 5 of them, settled under a thick tree. Half of them waiting to stop unsuspecting vehicles, the other half busy 'punishing' the 'successful' catches. I never get stopped when driving bigger cars, but the 9 year old santro 'fit' their criteria.

Cops - Knowing them and their lives

Cops in US & Cops back in Bangalore have a Huge Difference that we all know.

But true facts which even a Teenage BPO Employee would not tolerate is what their life is. Included below is a TOI Article on their life.... & most interestingly their Salary & extra pay for their work on Special Day!

In defence of the traffic police!!

In the "unlocking bangalore" debate I come from 2 or 3 contexts.

a) I believe there is at least 30% capacity on our roads which are wasted by non adherence and non implementation of the law( both traffic laws and a myriad of civic laws )

b) I believe that of the various enforcers/government bodies out there ,the traffic police is one of the better ones , but who are are always at the worst end of the stick, tremendously underresourced and unempowered.

Empower the Police and Depower the Citizens

Vasanth - 26-APR-2008

Police in Karnataka and whole of India is lagging behind in terms of infrastructure and skilled personnel. If we see advanced countries, Police is so powerful. Citizens do not dare to play around the police.

Policing the Police

murali772 - 16-APR-2008

I was on my daily dinner routine. Happened to see this on-duty police person walking out of his official patrol van called ‘Hoysala'. He walked up to the cashier of this local restaurant, grabbed some money, and was matter-of-factly walking back. Not that this was the first time I saw such a thing - but, I don't know what became of me (perhaps Bollywood effect?).

No sting operation this

silkboard - 26-OCT-2007

I swear, I was not trying a sting operation here. Though I do wish our electronic media tried sting operations at these day-to-day levels as well, but they are on to bigger things :)
