Local shuttles and BMTC - Example Whitefield silkboard - 26-JUN-2008
Let me try a detailed example of how BMTC can extend the reach of its services, without adding tons of buses to its fleet. It involves investing in identified trunk routes, and then in planning local shuttles. Lets dig a bit deep into Whitefield. [flickr-photo:id=2612712866,size=m][flickr-photo:id=2612678852,size=m] Say we identify the trunk routes between Whitefield and rest of Bangalore as Southbound (towards Koramangala E-City, Westbound (towards CBD via Airport road), and Northbound (towards Banaswadi, Hennur). Call these trunk routes, and put a bus every 10-15 minutes on each. Here are the three routes (indicative, not exact):

Fast rail track MG Road to BIAL - confused vmenon - 22-JUN-2008

CBI - Sanjaynagar junction magic boxes navshot - 18-JUN-2008
The CBI junction magic box work has started. But from what I can make out, there is only one box that would come up at CBI junction. Most likely, that would be the case for SJN junction. Given that, traffic flow would most likely be as in the figure. Please note that road widens after SJN towards CBI.

Delhi BRT - Lessons for Bangalore ? Naveen - 8-JUN-2008
It's one of the most controversial infrastructure projects in the country but for all those who said that the Delhi Bus Corridor system was an out and out failure, here is a reality check. A poll conducted by NDTV shows that there is a sharp divide in opinion on the success of the project between those who use buses on the corridor and those who drive cars on the same stretch. |

The latest 'India Today' ranking of the top engg colleges in the country places Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) at no 10, the highest amongst all the private engg colleges, and higher than quite a few NITs. Amongst the Bangalore city colleges, only M S Ramaiah College of Engg figures in the list at no 21. |
Traffic police - why stand and deliver? silkboard - 5-JUN-2008
Was driving my F-I-L's Santro the other day when I was stopped by one of those police parties. 5 of them, settled under a thick tree. Half of them waiting to stop unsuspecting vehicles, the other half busy 'punishing' the 'successful' catches. I never get stopped when driving bigger cars, but the 9 year old santro 'fit' their criteria. |
Bus services - a different approach murali772 - 1-JUN-2008
"Vayu Vajra I am told is very convenient - for 150 rupees - starts from Aishwarya stores - supposed to be at every half an hour - but that's not the case. I was told today morning that they have one at 3.40pm but when I reached I realised it got cancelled and the next one was only at 6.40 PM. |

Bus Services Suffer from an Image Problem Naveen - 30-MAY-2008
“A man who, beyond the age of 26, finds himself on a bus can count himself as a failure” – Margaret Thatcher, former British Prime Minister. Conventional bus services, the world over are generally perceived as slow, infrequent, inconvenient, uncomfortable, and distinctly lacking in status & quality. What is required for bangalore is a complete change in the way people travel. Invoking cosmetic changes & marketing conventional bus services are unlikely to make major impacts, other than marginally improve patronization (we have seen this all these years). Bus services, unfortunately carry a long-standing negative stigma regarding poor performance & inadequate customer services, despite BMTC being one of the best performing transport corporations. |
