Importance of Lakes in and around Bengalooru for drinking water needs of the city psaram42 - 14-MAY-2009
The city of Bengalooru had plenty of lakes earlier. Unfortunately due to lack of concern and unabashed greed, a lot of them are extinct now. Lakes are a very important aspect in the over all water management for a city like Bengalooru. (Some rivers were flowing through the city of Bangalore, I believe). |
LDA is back - Madivala lake and others silkboard - 11-MAY-2009
Who is actually responsible for upkeep of Bangalore's lakes? Answer may go like this - some lakes LDA, rest of them BWSSB. Refer late last year's news articles - lakes were transferred from LDA to BWSSB. But this was done only for some (17 or 18) lakes. To remind us all that they are around, LDA has floated work for rejuvenating 3 lakes. |

Madivala lake is dying. I think there is a definite plan in trying to kill the lake. First the hyacinth - i just dont understand why the hyacinth is allowed to mushroom and cover half the lake at any point of time - is there a mafia? |
Killing our lakes - Varthur Lake as well? silkboard - 28-APR-2009
No new post this, just a rehash of year old "Eating up Varthur Lake". Inspired by Rithesh's recent note on Hebbal/Nagavara Lake, I wanted to remind us about possible encorachments on the area/stream between Varthur and Belandur lakes. |
Killing our lakes - Hebbal/Nagavara Lake example Rithesh - 28-APR-2009
See the image below - it shows the Hebbala and Nagavara lakes. I am told by the locals that the area covered in the red boundary once formed an elaborate and huge lake system. The system first got divided by the Bellary road and the region right to the road subsequently dried out. This region was taken over by the UAS and they used it for rice/paddy crop experiments. |

Prashant.Murthy - 15-FEB-2009
Over the last 4 years I have been reading about articles in the news papers about the diminishing lakes in Blore. Once the city was proud to have hundreds of lakes, now has only 60+ lakes. I don't have exact statistics but what I know is Lake development Autority was once formed and they are doing the maintaining or for privatization of lakes. |
silkboard - 9-NOV-2008
After govt handed upkeep of some lakes from LDA to BWSSB, and in the midst of courts asking LDA to stop privatizing lakes (See Hindu news report, a victory for ESG and Leo, great show!), last week saw BBMP and BDA floating tenders for works on some lakes |
