The business of medical education

murali772 - 1-FEB-2016

You would never find advertisements for "confirmed admission" to any IIT or AIIMS or one asking you to book a seat in advance in any of these premier institutes. Neither are there advertisements promising you selection for the civil services or placement in an all-India service of your choice.

I'll do whatever it takes to protect my child

murali772 - 19-MAY-2015

"I'll do whatever it takes to protect my child" is what Chinese mothers are beginning to say after realising the kind of harm pollution (focus here has been largely on air) is causing to their children.

Health insurance

abidpqa - 12-FEB-2013

In India, private insurance promise to provide a certain amount of money in case of medical condition. This is not the purpose of health insurance. Health insurers have to provide guarantee that we will get treatment.  We dont have to know how much money they have paid to hospitals or doctors.. If the insurer, has paid x amount to doctor, do we have any benefit?

Here is a podcast that really got me thinking hard about medical intervention when death comes knocking.

Banana Republic

It is highly unlikely that all the directors of AMRI, Kolkata, were in charge of day-to-day functioning of the hospital. It was the same when the Bhopal disaster happened.

GoK's social sector work - Healthcare?

silkboard - 28-SEP-2010

Syed attempted to start a deeper look at Karnataka's programs in healthcare sector. Wanted to check if some online voluteers (search 'warriors') are interested to join in to dig out data and details on how state is doing in this important social sector.

For starters, there are three broad headings under which state is spending money in this sector

BBMP and Mosquitoes

Ravi_D - 16-JUL-2010

Taking a deviation to discuss a less fancy but important topic. Public Health.

According to today's DH Report, "Mosquito Control Project Director" Dr Lokesh says:

The Palike is spraying pesticides, carrying out fogging and has launched several health awareness camps to educate the public about maintaining cleanliness in and around their houses.

...has assigned three people to spray pesticides in each ward.

...has also undertaken a publicity drive to inform every citizen about the precautionary measures.

So the story goes. I haven't seen a single fogging machine or guys spraying pesticides at work. If DH wouldn't report it, I wouldn't have a clue there was a 'publicity drive'. But everything stated implies things that have either happened in the past or presently ongoing.

Do I live in a different Bangalore? Have you seen any of the above in your ward?
