Shaping Bangalore's periphery - before its too late silkboard - 20-NOV-2011
Our city, Bengaluru has a core, and periphery. Let us define the area bound between Outer Ring Road as the core, and beyond as periphery. If you look back from nineties onwards, City planners cared for people to live in the core, and work in the periphery. |

Local shuttles and BMTC - Example Whitefield silkboard - 26-JUN-2008
Let me try a detailed example of how BMTC can extend the reach of its services, without adding tons of buses to its fleet. It involves investing in identified trunk routes, and then in planning local shuttles. Lets dig a bit deep into Whitefield. [flickr-photo:id=2612712866,size=m][flickr-photo:id=2612678852,size=m] Say we identify the trunk routes between Whitefield and rest of Bangalore as Southbound (towards Koramangala E-City, Westbound (towards CBD via Airport road), and Northbound (towards Banaswadi, Hennur). Call these trunk routes, and put a bus every 10-15 minutes on each. Here are the three routes (indicative, not exact):

Marathahalli Bridge close to completion - finally silkboard - 10-JAN-2008
I still remember the sign board BDA had put up onsite when construction began on Marathahhali bridge (here). Start 30-4-2006, finish 30-7-2006. Were they kidding - 3 months, thats it? Anyway. dates moved, fast forward to January 2008, and the word going around is that we may get the full six lane bridge done in a few weeks. |
silkboard - 30-SEP-2007
Literally no peace or silence. Hear it all loud and clear when any of your neighbors talk. So called 'individual' houses, most of them joined with one another at hips. No air or space between them. 8 to 10 feet wide roads (practically speaking), dotted with cars, and cobwebbed with cables of all sorts - tv, telephone and electricity in that order. Whitefield suburb - upcoming road work silkboard - 14-AUG-2007
Spotted this tender recently on BBMP website. Have a look, a lot of roadwork coming up in Mahadevapura, Marathahalli and Whitefield sub-divisions - about 6 crore worth of work for each. How about we track this work? Basically, write to BBMP and ask them to publish the deadlines, actual money spent, what standards will be used to determine completion of work etc? Anyone interested? 3-4 of us can try do this together as an experiement to see how much effort it takes for citizens to really be in the know. |
silkboard - 9-AUG-2007[flickr-photo:id=1028754377,size=m] When Marathahalli bridge construction work was in full swing (it still is), and we were struggling to cross the run-down work site, I was thinking about connectivity problems of this east-of-Bangalore suburb. When I say Whitefield, I mean the whole Mahadevpura, Hoody, ITPL, Whitefield, RG Halli, Brookfields, Kundalahalli region. |
