Flyovers are not solutions

mrmaulik - 16-JUN-2009

One fine morning in Times of India I read Ahmedabad Municipal Corportions's Commissioner declared seven flyovers in his current financial Budget. It was surprised by facts that out of these all, only  for two junctions some traffic surveys and feasibility report were prepared and review by Engineering Department of Corporation.

Entropy example: Kilometer long jam for no real reason

silkboard - 22-NOV-2008

Marathahalli JamOne Wednesday afternoon, I noticed a kilometer long jam around a tiny intersection on Varthur Road at Marathahalli. The photo doesn't tell you much, but watch the video (below) and guess the reason for the chaos I captured:

Learning from Road Layouts

asj - 4-OCT-2008

Dear All,

I have for some time wanted to share how planning road layouts is vital for ensuring traffic flows smoothly.

Here is the first in what I hope to make a series (and hope other contribute too) of road layouts from UK. Aim is to share these observations with our planners to reduce entropy on our roads.

Entropy on roads - examples

silkboard - 28-AUG-2008

bus stand 1Entropy, aka chaos on the roads is a subject we have discussed a lot here. There are about a hundred comments thrown across various posts. How about consolidating those points and making them more presentable via picture posts? Here is my attempt with pictures over last two months. Look, we need to explain and understand one thing very clearly. Flyovers and road widening projects are like buying extra large clothes to deal with obesity. Some folks prefer exercises or medicines to shed some fat.

Bangalore Traffic Woes, avoid ad hoc solutions please!

psaram42 - 25-AUG-2008

Bangalore, keeping in pace with other cities in the world, has grown exponentially over the past half a century. The Key question while planning traffic solutions for such a growing city obviously would be “how to account for possible future growth?” Bangalore has a very good example in the Kempe Gouda Towers. Kempe Gouda had in his wisdom estimated the boundaries of Bangalore and built the Towers known after him.

Traffic & Transportation Policies and Strategies

Executive Summary of a Wilbur Smith study on Traffic & Transportation Policies and Strategies in Urban Areas in India is now available on the website of Ministry of Urban Development. The 20 page summary document makes a good reading.

Praja members would love the language, especially the terms like "slow moving vehicle index", "on-street parking interference index". Essentially, they have quantified stuff like "entropy", "edge friction", "turbulence" and "viscosity" that we often borrow and use here at Praja from thermo and fluid dynamics. Some equations for example:
