Pedestrian issues

murali772 - 28-SEP-2017

An Indian Express reporter called to ask if I could write a 200 page note on pedestrian issues in the city, perhaps since I was part of the PRAJA team that had filed a PIL in this behalf in the High Court (check here, for more on that).

A pedestrian response?!

idontspam - 2-MAR-2015

The mowing down of the school going 19 year old Arpita & others in Hebbal has caused severe consternation amongst people in Bangalore. The driver has been reported as saying he was new to the city & was looking for a signboard which could tell him the directions to where he needs to go and that diverted his attention from the signal in front of him.

BBMP's misplaced priorities

On the one hand, we have been reading repeatedly in the press that the BBMP is broke, and not in a oposition to pay contractors' bills in hundreds/ thousands of crores.

Role of Traffic Police in ensuring walkability on city roads

murali772 - 15-DEC-2014

I am a member of what is generally termed as the TAC (Traffic Advisory Committee), convened by the Addl Commissioner, Traffic, and quite often chaired by the city Police Commissioner himself.

Pedestrian PIL - How can you participate/help?

idontspam - 9-OCT-2014

1. Look at the affidavit and find if your road is a part of the list of roads BBMP wants to make walkable.

2. Take pictures of the footpath/sidewalk which are unwalkable/have obstructions. Make sure to put date & time on the pictures.

IRR/Old Airport Rd intersection Pedestrian Issues

idontspam - 21-OCT-2012

Naveen, SB & I decided at short notice to take a walk around the Domlur IRR/OAR (Old airport road) interchange to see the pedestrian issues in that area. I am attaching the route we too walking all around. Some points that showed up

1. Bus stop towards the city on OAR spills onto the ramp. Bus stop towards marathahalli blocks traffic entering OAR.

Hazardous installations

murali772 - 10-DEC-2011

This picture was taken on the footpath opposite Aadishwar showroom on the intermediate ring road (some 50M before the start of the Domlur fly-over ramp - approaching from Koramangala side). While such instances are not isolated across the city, what I found unique about this particular installation was its cross-arm covering almost the entire width of the footpath.

Forced into jay-walking

murali772 - 23-JUN-2010

Today, I had this strange experience. I had been invited to this meeting convened by Mr A Ravindra, advisor to the CM on urban issues, at the instance of the Bangalore Environment Trust, on the matter of 'road-widening', at 3.30 PM at the Vikas Soudha (On what transpired at the meeting, I will post separately - nothing too earth-shaking, though).

I reached well ahead of time, parked my car in the paid parking lot in the Cubbon park, near the library, and walked upto the Vikas Soudha main-gate. But, to reach the main gate, I had to cross the busy Vidhan Veedhi. There was a convenient pedestrian crossing, with signal lights, though the zebra markings had mostly got obliterated. The signal was showing red as I reached it, and the law-abiding citizen that I like to be seen to be, I waited for it to turn green, even as many people were crossing all over, darting through the speeding traffic. After some patient waiting, it suddenly occurred to me that a whole new cycle had started, even as the pedestrian signal had remained red right through.
