Solution for a decentralized Municipal Waste Management - How & Why?
nagrajprabhu - 18 February, 2010 | Bangalore | Contractors | Garbage | Action | Others | Everything else | Waste | solid waste | municipal | SWM | litter
What can we do about managing solid waste in tier I, II, III cities of India?
I am working on a rotating composter which can be used to manage waste locally (decentralized way).
I need some help with respect to mechanical engineering to improve the composter efficiency.
Does anyone in the group know about any fudning by Govt or other grants for such a project?
Any help in this regard is highly appreciated.
Thanks

Seen Drg . Will work. Charcoal on top is to absorb foul odor OK But odor will diffuse all sides unless the area is covered and odor travels in top direction. LET IT BE. Odor occurs due to lack of air or too much moisture. Perforated drum will handle that.
Lowest tray for water is for Leachate (call it water ) You may need a deeper tray below. Dimensions are all right.
COST Who will bear cost of prototype ? Get some potential users lined up. All apartment complexes... Mass prod will bring down costs . Any way Apartment Owneras Assn bears the cost. Get on with this device. Schools / colleges may line up for this. They all have Env class.
Pl see one set up in
SBI St Marks Rd. They use a cement Tank for Canteen food stuff. Compressor is used to blow air maybe twice a day. Deep trough at one end has pipe with turnable tap. One can place a bucket for Leachate. Top has a tray for charcoal. All fumes (odor problem ) has only one way to move via CHARCOAL BED. There is a school on one side of SBI. This comost pit is next to school playground on SBI side.Process What is the feed ? You can load it in several days. It stays locked up for 3 -4 or more weeks. Will need Sawdust / dried leaves ( all carbon )
Workout how much kitchen waste (green) you will get fr one kitchen. This needs to be shredded (alll manual NO POWER). Smaller particle means faster decay.
Are U planning for COOKED FOOD / NO COOKED FOOD
How about MEAT ? FISH remains ? Study this aspect also.... All this can be worked out as U proceed with the Hard ware
