Living in Indiranagar or any other BDA locality in Bangalore is like living in wilderness devoid an identity.  One cannot blame BDA entirely for this a seeming short sightedness. After all engineers are supposed to put to practice the engineering what they have learnt by rote.

Present day metropolitan cities require some re search / innovation to go further than known designs. Does Gated communities innovation needs to be incorporated for better cities?

Gated communities are neighborhoods in which access is limited only to authorized residents and their guests. These communities are often staffed with a security team that watches the front gate 24 hours per day to make sure only those with permission are allowed inside. These types of communities are typically upscale and are popular with people for several reasons. Learning some advantages to living in a gated community may convince you to purchase a home in one of these protected areas.

  1. security
  2. community living
  3. one category
  4. Compatible Living standards
  5. Better social life
  6. Upbringing Children
  7. Centralized exclusive maintenance and services
  8. in contrast to Apartments which are building with multiple dwellings

Wikipedia on gated community

psaram42 - 28 November, 2012 - 05:57

In its modern form, a gated community is a form of residential community orhousing estate containing strictly-controlled entrances for pedestrians, bicycles, and automobiles, and often characterized by a closed perimeter of walls and fences. Gated communities usually consist of small residential streets and include various shared amenities. For smaller communities this may be only a park or other common area. For larger communities, it may be possible for residents to stay within the community for most day-to-day activities. Gated communities are a type of common interest development, but are distinct from intentional communities

The BDA town planning concept

psaram42 - 1 December, 2012 - 04:46

The BDA has the concept of main and cross roads which run from east west and north south respectively. All end up in the high ways running across the city. Is it necessary? What are the pros and cons, I wonder.

My question:-

Can all the entries except the middle one be closed on all four sides of a bigger square or rectangle? The extra real estate created could be used for paid parking.

>Can all the entries except the middle one be closed on all four sides of a bigger square or rectangle? >The extra real estate created could be used for paid parking

Couple of challenges with doing that

1) we may be creating a bottle neck & traffic jam at the sole remaining entry.

2) how do we prevent misuse of the remaining dead ends (closed entries)?  Misuse like dumping garbage; improper parking...who knows..somebody may setup a small roadside garage to repair vehicles like i have once seen in Madras when i was growing up.

Optimum Design

psaram42 - 1 December, 2012 - 09:27

Your apprehensions are valid blrpraj .

The design of a rectangle of given dimensions with a single central [or otherwise] entry at each side is an optimization problem. There will be 4 entries for this rectangle not a single one as visualized by you. Apart from this the road widths are also added parameters.

In the simplest case, an optimization problem consists of maximizing or minimizing a real function by systematically choosing input values from within an allowed set and computing the value of the function. The generalization of optimization theory and techniques to other formulations comprises a large area of applied mathematics. More generally, optimization includes finding "best available" values of some objective function given a defined domain, including a variety of different
types of objective functions and different types of domains.

Preventing misuse of remaining dead ends is a civic issue. The dead ends being real estate can be autioned pubicly. Alternately they could be leased to privet contractors for maintaining

  1. trees
  2. Garden
  3. park
  4. parking lot
  5. Etc.

At last, a law to stop almost

At last, a law to stop almost anyone from doing almost anything

These laws will be used to stamp out plurality and difference, to douse the exuberance of youth,..

Until the late 19th century much of our city space was owned by private landlords. Squares were gated, ...
