I came across a project being done by an NGO called Parisara and BWSSB. They are doing something to revive the greenery for bangalore. I thought that I will share the same over here so that readers of praja can participate if interested. Excerpt from the site of Spoorthivana
Vision :
To preserve the eco system for future generations.Mission:
To grow trees with active public participation and involvement. To create awareness among public and to create a live museum of memories so that the future generations would be inspired. Spoorthivana 35 Kms away from Bangalore city on way to Magadi, near the confluence of Arkavathi and Kumudvathi rivers; SPOORTHIVANA – a dream project for preserving all your cherished memories by planting saplings, has come up in 300 acres of sprawling terrains belonging to Bangalore Water Supply & Sewerage Board (BWSSB) at TG Halli (Thippagondanahalli) reservoir catchment area. The Government of Karnataka has approved this greening venture with BWSSB and Parisara The idea is that you could sponsor a tree for Rs 500/- and it will be maintained by the spoorthivana team. You do not own the tree (govt of karnataka does) , but you will be given an ID card for your tree. Please visit the site for more information. http://www.spoorthivana.org/ I came across the site from an old friend who has helped to setup a corporate sponsorship program for the project. She could get one hectar sponsored by her company and get 170 trees planted. You could find details at http://www.spoorthivana.blogspot.com/COMMENTS

Interesting concept. But I wonder how many people will shell out money for only the ecological cause withough economic returns.
What I think we need are community owned 'green' installations. Here is one example by Scott Adams (NSFW heading but content is OK).
Interestingly, Suzlon (an Indian MNC if you will) has this concept where you can pay the company and own a wind turbine. The company installs, maintains the turbine and sells the power. You get tax rebates for investing in green energy and make more money than you invested. Win-win.

i like that it is a green space along the water body. at the very least it will do some good in preventing erosion and slow down silt accumulation. i think this is the way to go in the long run. Bangalore will have to consolidate its green spaces. catchments are all gone now, atleast the lakes they should secure through these type of ideas. right about now they have to get very serious about saving the lakes. ps 1: thampan do you know anybody in BWSSB from whom we can get details of what exactly they are doing when they valley re-design in JNNURM? ps 2: thanks for posting this and adding the BWSSB tag.

Rotary has a project called Greendream that has undertaken planting of 1,00,000 trees around the Whitefield area of Bangalore. While they started this project in 2008, they have yet to reach their magic number, they have been hindered by delays for approval, logistics, etc. But I am sure they will reach their number.
