Fishbone Other Problems?
tsubba - 27 May, 2008 | Bangalore | Everything else
sri thanks for the pointer to fishbone. read around the subject a bit. from the brief reading it appears like a useful tool. a lot of the time we go around and around and get so involved in one aspect of the solution that we tend to forget the overall picture. tools like these can provide structure to our ideas and thoughts. at the very minimum this should provide a good visual map of the discussions. ultimately we are doing quality/service analysis most of the time. sri can you play teacher teacher and share your gyaan on these for us. perhaps start with a list of such tools? also please tell us about the pitfalls and limitations of the tool. hopefully in our enthu we dont end up abusing it. folks please look around fishbone a bit. maybe we can fishbone bmtc stops, fishbone individual intersections, fishbone education etc etc? stuff like bial will get the best tools and people always, but what about the flow in front of mysore road sat station that vasanth was talking about. why not fishbone it? perhaps the b* agencies already do it. but as consumers and complainers and observers and suggesters etc perhaps we should too. may be i am over estimating too. let me know.

TS - Click the link below for a very basic fishbone diagram.

However, as Prof.Ishikawa had demonstrated, it can also cover very complex issues.
i would have fishboned fishbone itself but need to run.

Tarle - fishbones are for undesirable symptoms in processes
s_yajaman - 28 May, 2008 - 04:03
Tarle,
QUick correction. You don't fishbone bus-stops of traffic intersections or flyovers. You do a fishbone for signs of problems - e.g. jam at a bus-stop or gridlocked intersection.
The basic premise is that you don't beat up the person closest to the problem, but rather find the root cause and eliminate it.
Actually I am not sure if the sort of problems you described can be diagnosed by a fishbone. Fishbones are best for processes - manufacturing or business. Let me see what other tools are there for analysis of the sort of problems you describe.
Will send you stuff on Ishikawa.

hmm see that is what i was talking about insider knowledge. thanks. i assumed that depending on the sign of the question(+/-) you could come up with bottle necks/oppurtunities. object decongest intersection. bones = causes of congestion. didnt read thouroughly, perhaps pure fishbone is concerned with zoning in on one bone. what threw me off is that somewhere i remember reading that they came up with features of mazda miata using fishbones. that is they designed a car brainstorming on a fishbone.
