This is a followup to the road working group call, we (nithin, asj and myself) had a couple of weeks back. After that, I also talked to a contractor who has built roads (Pradeep). The consolidated "whats the story" is below, in the format of question/answers. Needs a lot more work and refining, but feel free to comment on the work so far. Also, if you want to call in and give your feedback, send me a private message. |

I am not doing a summary here of the IRC codes for road markings. I ordered a copy and got it yesterday and flipped through it. The norms / guidelines cover the basics well. Significantly, there is clear guideline on GIVE WAY - markings. |

Freeways are Freeways and City Roads are City Roads asj - 8-OCT-2008
Freeways are Freeways and City Roads are City Roads, there is no confusion about that. By definition a Freeway is - FREE - of pedestrians / cyclists and T or cross junctions. Our planners have never either understood this or did not care or had ulterior motives. |

Dear All, I have for some time wanted to share how planning road layouts is vital for ensuring traffic flows smoothly. Ok, before we make suggestions, we need to be very explicit about what we understand about the road. Since, sri is the local malla complete with a high flung jeTTi and spread out rhetorical stance and all*, we start with what he said about this road. We keep in mind that beyond his generic description, which nevertheless gives us a feel for the road, we need explicit and detailed details. Srivatsa said:

Simple Solution to Ganesh Mandals and digging of the roads asj - 1-SEP-2008
We all agonise each year over roads being dug up by Ganesh Mandals (Lokmanya Tilak must be restless seeing what his efforts to pull the community have come to).
In the past, I have suggested that barrels are used to support bamboo pole's. One can either fill the barrels with sand and rubble to support the pole or even produce pre-fabricated barrels filled with concrete with a central gap to secure the pole. I have seen such pre-fabricated barrels in use in UK where they are used to erect temporary traffic lights during road works. |

Mr Chavan lost his son to bad road hump design. He used RTI to get information. Now he is planning to do PIL "seeking a High Court directive to the authorities to either remove the unscientific humps or relay them as per Indian Road Congress standards".
