Note - Site structure changes

admin123 - 3-JUN-2008

We are planning a re-structure of the website so that we can expand the site to reach the citizens of various other cities and citizen groups in these cities. Below is the summary of changes in brief.

modern metered taxis in Pune

sanchitnis - 2-JUN-2008

I am not aware of any modern metered taxi service like other major cities in India where one can book taxis over phone or web. Currently there are old rickety yello/black cabs only at airport or Railways station and they do not use meters even though they are supposed to.

Any reason why the progressive city of Pune lacks such a basic service?

Energy Efficiency in Buildings

shas3n - 20-MAY-2008

As the summer months progress and our hydro-electric reservoirs dry down, along comes the dreaded load-shedding. While it is true that the demand for electricity is far greater than the supply, I guess there is surely something we can do to shorten this gap from the supply end. For this post, I would skip the issues with ‘leakage’ or electricity and ‘grid inefficiency’ and would discuss about the technical and policy aspects at the end-user level. I hope you will be able to add your inputs and we can get the required policy changes through collective lobbying. (Image Courtesy jalalspage)

Building plan submission and clearance - all online!?

silkboard - 9-MAY-2008

Spotted a news clip in Pune newspaper (ToI) this week that said - PCMC (Pimpri Chinchwad, a Pune suburb) is planning to make sanctioning of building plans an online process. So:

"At present, builders are required to submit the papers and the necessary documents pertaining to building plans to the PCMC. The civic body has now developed a software to scrutinise the papers once they are submitted on-line ... The software will help in checking all aspects of the building plans and confirm whether they comply with the building bylaws, TDR and FSI restrictions, etc."

Low beams or high beams?

Video 14: Low beams or high beams? कौनसे लाईट को कब इस्तमाल करे? One feature of travelling in India at dusk or later is the lack of understanding amongst drivers on when to use the vehicles headlights. Often drivers don't use any lights even when it is dark, on other hand, some use the high beam even in built up urban areas. This short film hopefully will help create awareness amongst drivers. This is vital as correct use of lights can avert accidents.

Saying goodbye to subways

asj - 13-MAY-2009

In the past I had shared images of useless pedestrian subways near Hammersmith. Instead the pedestrian refuges were so effective and popular that the subways became disused. Work is still on going, but notice how the ugly space occupying lesions have been surgically removed to make way for a more likeable streetscape.
