Single body for all transportation works - Pune does it silkboard - 24-OCT-2008
Learning from mistakes and gaps at other cities - Pune could be doing that. Read this morning, with great interest that Pune has created a special purpose vehicle called Pune Infrastructure Development Corporation (PIDC). Quoting this story (PIDC cleared), this body will be: |
Traffic Congestion – Possible case for a PIL Naveen - 20-OCT-2008
As outlined below, the formation of the prescribed bodies to tackle traffic congestion & to improve living conditions in the city was completed some time ago as recommended. Despite this, no concrete steps seem to be planned to stem the rot. The same old solutions continue to be doled out – the usual widening of roads after felling more trees & introducing more bus routes. These temporary solutions have been making things worse as widening roads invites more vehicles & the losers continue to be pedestrians & public transport users. |

Keep the saarige, let go yelli-iddira tsubba - 21-JUL-2008Understanding competition as a/the solution for public transit. Muralidhar rao's praja post is a starting point for the discussion on competizing public transport. The other day, during the PTWG meeting, when the issue of the pathetic condition of BMTC's website and demise of yelli-iddira came up, he broke into an impassioned and yet articulate speech. I cannot recollect his exact words, but his basic point was that BMTC lacks any competitive or regulatory pressure and hence the pathetic state of those services. The only way to get service levels to improve is to open its domain for competition. I have heard his basic position many times, but to hear him make his case in person was a friends, countrymen and romans moment for me. In any case, his speech got me thinking ... |
George E Matthew - 13-JUN-2008
I had previously posted about the problems with travel to BIAL through BMTC. That posted concluded with the problem of heavy traffic through the city until the Hebbal flyover. Please note that no new kind of transport network to the airport, public or private can solve this problem. BIAS from BMTC, Meru Easy Cabs, Airlift -all get stuck in traffic. Outside the city, in general roads are pretty good, especially the National Highways. BDA will build a peripheral expressway, which may be completed late but is likely to be wide and traffic free. However, it will not help solve the biggest jams within the city. |
TTMCs - Will They Solve Problems ? Naveen - 10-JUN-2008
This is a continuation of discussion started by thebangalorean ('bus stops to have shopping malls'). Here is what the CTTP report states about development of Traffic & Transportation Mgmnt Centers, or TTMCs (Shantinagar TTMC pic courtesy rednivaram): "TTMC’s are planned to have multi-level parking lot, public utilities like mini-shopping centres and food courts. These centers in addition to providing park & ride facilities are also proposed to act as hubs for Mini–Buses planned by BMTC to transport the commuters from every major residential area to the nearest TTMC, so that commuters can board a bus of their choice. |
Delhi BRT - Lessons for Bangalore ? Naveen - 8-JUN-2008
It's one of the most controversial infrastructure projects in the country but for all those who said that the Delhi Bus Corridor system was an out and out failure, here is a reality check. A poll conducted by NDTV shows that there is a sharp divide in opinion on the success of the project between those who use buses on the corridor and those who drive cars on the same stretch. |
