BTRAC signs - How much thought ?

B-TRAC has been putting up a lot of signs all over the place. I was wondering a couple of things -

1. How much thought/analysis has gone in to the positioning.

Expired or Suspended public transport related domains

BTRAC road divider menace

Its slowly taking over all roads in Bangalore and this needs to be stopped immediately. In the name of BTRAC they are laying these road dividers which I am sure in not in any of the road design books.

BTRAC & Signals

BTRAC is putting signals in almost every intersections and replacing manual signals with lights.

One thing I observed in most of the replacement was that there is more congestion and waiting now. Traffic cops were manually observing the density of vehicles and releasing it accordingly. Waiting times used to be less.

Tune your mind to observe traffic signs in the city, and you'd notice a few things. One, BTRAC project is busy putting up a lot of new ones. Two, perhaps they needn't have spent taxpayer's money on putting them up. Three, sorry Mr Sood, BTRAC may not be doing the best that it can.

Traffic Lights don't work

On one hand, we have the B-TRAC initiative that the Bengaluru Traffic police claim will improve traffic conditions, lights and signage. On the other, we have traffic signals that don't work or work erratically and have gone unfixed for months.

IRC Road markings & signs

I am not doing a summary here of the IRC codes for road markings. I ordered a copy and got it yesterday and flipped through it. The norms / guidelines cover the basics well. Significantly, there is clear guideline on GIVE WAY - markings.

BTRAC - New TMC, 20000 road signs

As the newspapers reported, work began on a brand new Traffic Management Center for Bangalore on October 6. Its being designed by the same guys who have build Network Operation Centers and Data cnters for IT companies, the facility is going to be similar to those - lots of screens on one big wall and seatings or cubicles besides it for policemen to watch and control cemeras and signals:

Intelligent Transportation systems and Traffic signals

We had learnt a lot of interesting things from our meeting with Mr. Sood. Looks like things are now moving further ahead. Tenders have been floated for installation of Intelligent traffic signals. (Source: TOI). Moreover, over the next year there will also be a lot of action with Area Traffic Control (ATC), Variabe Message System (VMS) etc.
