Bus Priority Examples: Manchester Automatic Traffic Bollards asj - 30-OCT-2008This is rather amusing but its a great example of ensuring bus priority - and though this stuff can be used on segregated bus lanes in Delhi and Pune, they may be best considered for implementing peripheral bus lanes with success. |
Make Roads / footpaths and then dig them away to glory asj - 11-OCT-2008

Volunteers for translating the British Highway Code asj - 10-OCT-2008
Dear all, A short while ago I applied to the crown copyrights permission to translate the British Highway Code in to Indian languages. They have granted that permission. India does not have an equivalent resource and it may be great to translate this material. |
Urban development, costs of Metro and Indian budget - a perspective asj - 10-OCT-2008
In my arguments with regards BRTS, I often bring up the key but neglected and forgotten matter of cost-effectiveness of a given solution to our transportation problems. It should come as no surprise to most who are acquainted with my stance that I hate the idea of spending money without a clear crsip rationale and long term plan. And the Metro falls under this category as far as I am concerned. MMRDA officials have in the past replied in agreement to my suggestion that Mumbai Metro will not solve its problems at all. Given the fact that 10000 daily migrants to Mumbai will swell it to a city 30 million plus by 2030, it will be fair to say that whether Mumbai gets sea links or Metro rail, people will still be travelling in quasi or near stampede like situations and roads will always remain clogged. |
Fight to save Pune Green Cover & Public Spaces - Last date for sending objections 02 Dec 08 asj - 10-OCT-2008
In late 90s, Pune city limits were expanded by including 23 fringe villages within corporation bounds. As per law, these new areas needed to have a development plan. The intent was to allow development to happen even on hills. |

Simple Solution to Ganesh Mandals and digging of the roads asj - 1-SEP-2008
We all agonise each year over roads being dug up by Ganesh Mandals (Lokmanya Tilak must be restless seeing what his efforts to pull the community have come to).
In the past, I have suggested that barrels are used to support bamboo pole's. One can either fill the barrels with sand and rubble to support the pole or even produce pre-fabricated barrels filled with concrete with a central gap to secure the pole. I have seen such pre-fabricated barrels in use in UK where they are used to erect temporary traffic lights during road works. |

How good is your Road Safety Knowledge - Test your self against 170 questions asj - 25-AUG-2008
For some time now I have been working towards making available an Interactive road safety quiz database for Indian road users.
Here is the entire quiz database of 170 questions available as two interactive quiz e-book's to test your knowledge of road safety related issues. This is a free downloadable resource for all who are preparing to sit the theory driving test as a part of licensing procedure. The latter is rare as most states in India still have not implemented a mandatory theory test for learner drivers. Hope is that Road Traffic Authorities in India use the above as a starting point for implementing a mandatory theory test for all new learner drivers. This resource is also likely to be a perfect way of refreshing the knowledge base of those who have been driving for several years.
